A lot of bad news has been hitting the airwaves lately with Darth Vader robbers, man-eating psychos, and a pregnant woman being burned alive. There is still a lot of good in the world though, and this time it comes from the actions and heart of a nine-year-old boy that gave an all-expenses paid trip to Walt Disney World away to the family of a fallen soldier on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2012.
Brendan Haas of Massachusetts won the prize that any child in the world would dream of winning. A trading contest he set up on Facebook to help a military family is how Haas earned the trip so he figured helping another would be the next best thing to do.
Back in February, Brendan set up a “Soldier for a Soldier” page on Facebook in attempt to trade up from a toy soldier to a Disney World trip. He got the idea from the man that traded a red paper clip all the way up to a house.
Throughout all the trades, Brendan ended up with Disney gift certificates worth almost $900 along with airfare and a stay at a Disney World Resort.
Instead of taking the trip for himself though, Brendan decided to do something else on Memorial Day and he drew the name of two-year-old Liberty Hope Steele out of a hat. The young girl lost her father, Army Lt. Timothy Steele, last August when he was killed in Afghanistan.
“I think it would make them a lot happier,” Brendan Haas said.
Strangely enough, the parents of Lt. Steele live nearby so Brendan went to their home and surprised them with news of their Disney World trip.
“Tim was pretty special to us,” Jack Steele, Timothy’s father told WDHT-TV. “He knew what he wanted to do at a very young age.”
When word first got out about Brendan’s unselfish acts, the emotional responses and admiration came his way in huge amounts on Facebook.
“Your one amazing young man,” wrote Ann Marie Smith Braga, “Our family lives on Hanscom AFB in Bedford, Mass. We are an active duty Army family. I want to thank you from all the Army families here at Hanscom.”
“Your parents must be so proud of you,” wrote Cheryl Simoes-Buente. “I hope you always will be such a caring and amazing person. God bless you for your thoughtfulness!!!”
Sometimes it just takes the heart of a child to let people know that there is a lot of kindness and sincerity in the world. Many men and women make the ultimate sacrifices in giving for the freedom of others. Giving up a Disney World trip is the equivalent to such a sacrifice for a child as young and as wonderful as Brendan.
