“We’ve always loved music, like literally, our entire lives.” Liz of the twin sister duo Megan & Liz began. I spoke to them recently about their victory at the iHeartRadio Rising Star Campaign. Sponsored by iHeartRadio and Macy’s the campaign sought to find and crown a new Pop artist or band voted on by fans and the reward is the chance to perform in the opening slot at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in September along top industry celebrities and artists.
The 19 year old Nashville based twins confessed, “I don’t think either of us ever considered doing a real career without each other. It’s always just been like, we’re together all the time and we love a lot of the same things, you know, and we just sing together. That is kind of our thing.” Not surprisingly each of their artistic styles are entirely complementary of the other’s. “Sometimes I’ll come to Liz with some lyrics and she’ll edit them and visa versa.” Megan relayed, adding, “Sometimes I’ll come up with the melody and then Liz will co-write and we are very collaborative. It’s really different but Liz tends to be more lyrical and I tend to be more melodical.”
When their management approached them earlier this year about entering the iHeartRadio Rising Star Campaign, however, the duo hesitated. Megan explained, “Our management came to us and asked if we wanted to be in this contest and at that point we had no idea who we were going to be up against. We were really hesitant because it’s a huge contest, obviously with Clear Channel sponsoring it.” Along with Clear Channel and Macy’s A-list celebrities such as Will.i.am, Pitbull, David Guetta and others got involved by tweeting their own fans soliciting votes for their favorite entrants.
As exciting and comforting as that may sound Megan & Liz were entirely unnerved by it. Liz said, “Seeing the really big celebrities Tweet about it was, well it was kind of scary for us, because it wasn’t for us. They were saying Tweet for the other people. So we were kind of like, that’s really cool that they know about the contest but it kind of stunk that they were not Tweeting for us.” Instead strength of their fanbase prevailed sending the duo to victory. “It really proves that our fan base is incredible and that they really do care and will fight for us. It’s really awesome!” Liz said.
Now the talented singer/songwriting combo is focused on their debut album which they hope to release in September. Megan revealed, “We are trying to make our album very versatile and we are trying to make it a lot of Pop, upbeat, awesome songs but also stuff that really has good meaning and story behind it.” And Liz interjected, “I feel like this album is going to be really, really what we’re feeling and what we’re going through. It is like our life pretty much and what is happening but like in song. When we write our songs we are in between doing this or in between doing that so it’s just really real life inspired.”
In the meantime both Megan & Liz offered a little advice to all aspiring artists and dreamers. Megan began, “Never give up. And if you’re dreams don’t scare you they’re not big enough. That’s something that I’ve always lived by. The bigger you dream, the more you consciously work towards that dream and I think that is something most definitely to live by.” And Liz concluded, “I would just add, work really hard. Don’t be afraid to work hard and if you want something put everything into it. That’s what has been working for us and hard work goes a long way.” Look for the talented twin sisters album in September debuting new music and opening the iHeartRadio Music Festival 2012 in Las Vegas.
