This last week in Austin, has proven that summer is here for a while. Everyone interviewed just wants to be able to “throw something on that is light and quick and flip flops are a big part of the trend,” says Brandie Flours, a junior studying business at UT. While flip flops have been a staple of most Texans ‘shoe wardrobe’ for the last twenty years or so, the new styles are just a bit different. Many of the college students in the city wear the basic flat flip flop but “they have to be in vibrant colors,” adds Wendy Griffith, a sales associate at Macy’s. Orange is a must have on your summer shopping list. But that’s not all.
In enters the designer flip flops. “You can always go to any of the stores at The Domain and buy the basic flip flop. Macy’s is having the best sale ever this weekend. With the July 4th celebration theme, and the hot, summer days here, sales are necessary more so than ever before. Due to the consumer index, we have to do a lot more to get the customers out of their pools, air conditioned homes, and into the thinking mode that buying something new is just as important as it was two years ago. Especially for the fashionistas out there. Our sales range from 15% off to 75% off have produced great results already,” states a Marketing and Merchandising Director at the Macy’s -Domain.
Flip flops from just about every designer is being showcased this weekend. While some tend to be rather high in price, there are great designer flip flops at Macy’s with the added bonus of the sensational mark downs. An amazing find was at Brighton. While sales are happening here as well, “the flip flops we are selling are stunning and they do not cost a great deal,” says a sales associate that was pointing out the best seller. Take a look at the picture. You will see the low wedged heel, the animal patterns and the basic black with an added touch of class.
Although color is key, when it comes to the designer couture level, “black still always sells best. It goes with just about everything in a woman’s wardrobe. And this style is being worn to the office because of the heel making it a bit more professional looking.” Speaking to several career women throughout the city, they are embracing this style and trying to find a selection that they want this summer. “A designer pair is a must if the price is right. As long as you have a wedged heel, it is totally acceptable to wear these flip flops to work,” adds Amanda Stephenson, a financial advisor in corporate Austin.
If anyone can pull this look off, it is the Austinite women that make our city so unique. Take a glimpse down as you walk the streets. You will notice how the evolution of the flip flop has made it to the business world. I still would recommend the basics in the bright colors as well. Marissa Baterona, a senior at UT concludes,”we can not live without at least four pairs of flip flops. Most are $12.00. You just slip them on and off you go. We couldn’t ask for more.” But now, there is more. Take advantage of all the sales and buy a pair with wedges. Any pair that catches your eye and your feet, will do. This is going to be another hot summer. You can never have enough flip flops to make it through the days and nights in Austin. Have fun choosing and celebrate with style.
