No one truly takes compilation albums seriously. Usually compilation records are throwaway songs that weren’t good enough to make the artists solo album. The positive thing about these releases is that occasionally a gem comes out of them.
In 2011 Maybach Music Group released Self Made, a compilation album featuring Rick Ross’s MMG roster. That album produced the monster hit ‘Tupac Back’ and introduced the world to Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill. Looking to trump the success of Self Made, Maybach Music Group is back with the second installment of Self Made appropriately titled Self Made 2.
The album begins with an eight minute posse cut featuring West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar called ‘Power Circle’. Produced by Lee Major, ‘Power Circle’ acts as an introduction to the Maybach Music Group crew, while Ross is the head honcho and leader it’s Wale that steals the show. Wale raps, “Gotta dark heart, bright mind, drive women crazy/I giver he D, I throw up 2, I call that sh*t a safety.”
‘Black Magic’ is a sinister track in the same vein of last years ‘Tupac Back’. Meek Mill is on rhyming duty while Rick Ross the boss handles the chorus, “There go the car, there go the grill/A hundred mill, David Copperfield.”
On the sure fire club hit ‘Actin Up’ Meek Mill raps, “’Cause I run sh*t like Edgerrin or better yet like Rev and them/And on the bottom of my sneaks they red man, and I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout no damn Mef and them.”
‘Fountain of Youth’ is the albums best song. The song is produced by Cardiak and it brings a different vibe than the rest of the songs on Self Made 2. ‘Fountain of Youth’ features Nipsey Hussle and its laid-back music serves as a nice break from the club anthems that dominate Self Made 2.
Former B2K lead singer Omarion has joined the Maybach Music Group family and doesn’t fit in at all. On the song ‘M.I.A.’ the former child star sings “My new lady say she leaving me, aw f*ck her, I don’t care/Plus I got another over there.” Omarion also appears on the single ‘Let’s Talk’, a song that embarrassingly bastardizes Hip-Hop classics ‘Big Poppa’ and ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’.
The lyrics on Self Made 2 are good for the most part. At times they got lost in the obnoxious beats and choruses. On ‘Bag of Money’ Rick Ross states, “My bitch bad, lookin’ like a bag of money,” clever.
Self Made 2 features appearances from Nas, T.I., Kendrick Lamar, Ace Hood, Bun B, Wiz Khalifa, Roscoe Dash, T-Pain, Nipsey Hussle, and French Montana. The production on the album is handled by a slew of producers that unfortunately all have the same sound.
Self Made 2 is about what you’d expect in today’s Hip-Hop landscape—a bunch of songs about flossing with simple beats and catchy hooks. While the lyrics are surprisingly well put together, the music all sounds the same. Self Made 2 sounds like a collection of singles meant solely for the radio. The problem is it’s nearly impossible to differentiate one song from the other.
