For the past few years, Chael Sonnen has transformed himself from a middling middleweight fighter, unknown to many UFC casual fans, into a number one contender known for spewing trash talk out of his mouth faster than a broken trash dispenser.
Sonnen has targeted several Brazilian fighters, and Brazil as a country, but specifically, current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has been the main point of interest in Sonnen’s WWE style tirades.
After calling Silva a “phony” on more than one occasion, proclaiming that Brazilians haven’t entered the 21st in many technological aspects and insulting most of Silva’s closest friends and training partners, Silva has declined past opportunities to retaliate with words.
Instead, Silva has relied on his 2010 victory over Sonnen as the only stat or proclamation needed when dissecting their rivalry.
Monday afternoon during a UFC 148 conference call, everything changed.
Silva answered a reporter’s question and finally let everyone know exactly how he feels about his July 7 opponent and what he plans to do to him inside the Octagon.
“First of all, Chael is a criminal,” Silva started with. “He’s been convicted of crimes. He doesn’t deserve to be inside of the octagon. When the time comes and the time is right, I’m going to break his face and break every one of the teeth in his mouth.”
“What I’m going to do inside the octagon is something that’s going to change the image of the sport,”Silva continued. “I’m going to beat his ass like he’s never been beaten before. I’m going to make sure that every one of his teeth are broken, his arms are broken, his legs are broken. He’s not going to be able to walk out of the octagon by himself. I can guarantee that.”
In most instances, such as this spectacular conference call, Sonnen would be the target for most questions. But after Silva’s unexpectedly heated statements, most questions shifted toward the middleweight champion’s direction.
“There’s going to be no difference in the end,” Silva said. “The first time we fought he stepped out the loser. And he’s going to step out losing again this time. The only difference is this time, he’s going to have to go see a plastic surgeon after the fight.”
Strangely, Sonnen didn’t have much to say in retaliation, sounding almost amused at Silva’s sudden emotional outburst.
Eventually Silva hung up and left the call but not before taking one final shot saying he would beat Sonnen “the way his parents should have beat him to teach him some manners.”
The UFC has been trumping this card as the “biggest rematch in UFC history” and with hype like this, it’s hard not to believe them.
