As soon as it feels as if star gazing is going to cause you to stumble on something you overlooked on the ground, the study of astrology reels everything back into the mundane elements. In this case the elements are taken very seriously for the purposes of astrology birth charts. These elements tell much about the essence of the personality.
Fire, Earth, Air, and Water
For the purposes of astrology, these descriptions speak for themselves, somewhat. They describe various aspects of a personality. Since people are multifaceted, an individual always has a blend of these elements throughout the astrological makeup.
More than the obvious, the qualities inherent in the elements reveal subtleties. Each element is assigned to a different planet, and every astrological sign has a representative planet. Adolf Hitler had fire signs joined in with an obsession to control. Observing the elements is just one way that astrology defines the individual character.
The signs that are included in the astrological element of fire are Leo, Sagittarius, and Aries.
Fire tends to go straight up. Heat represents passion that is expressed through emanation. In the same vein, fire signs are less sensitive, known to emit more than receive. The element of fire is passionate, and full of energy. Inherently unstable, fire signs express emotions of joy, anger, and enthusiasm. The fire element shies away from feelings of sadness or depression because recognition of these kinds of emotions require quiet contemplation. The antithesis of the Fire sign is stagnation.
The earth signs are Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo
Earth signs are grounded and practical. Earth people reel things back to the ground level, and can use their practical sense to point out the humorous side of life, or by contrast highlight the ridiculous. Most people live by earthy restraints. No matter how idealistic we may be, nothing is rooted in reality unless it touches the earth plane. Emotional needs are relegated less importance to an Earth sign, because emotions come into conflict with their view of reality. Earth elements are passive unless other placements in the birth chart spur them on.
The air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius
Air signs aren’t as reactive, self-asserting, or strong willed as Fire signs yet still have a similar expression. Wind is expressive like fire, but stays closer to the earth and travels horizontally to the earth plane. Thought can carry the air element into far off conceptions without losing contact with the earth plane. Air signs are mentally quick. All three air signs are people oriented, but sometimes can’t handle intimate relationships. The quality of air is to be everywhere all at once. The need for continual contact with others detracts from the status of one on one intimacy.
Water signs are Pisces, Scorpio, and Cancer
Water signs may fit under the description, “still waters run deep.” Deep bodies of water always hold mystery, and water signs are consistent with being inconsistent. Feelings that flow like water are difficult for water signs to express. Often, there are no words to describe the intuitive thoughts and feelings they experience. Of the the three water signs, Scorpio holds the deepest mystery. Linear, and rational modes of thinking are not part of the watery make up. Feminine and receptive, the inward existence of the water signs runs against the grain of today’s cultural extroversion.
As the four elements represent categories of the twelve planets, the elements are often referred to as the tripilicities. Any given astrology chart will have a mix of these elements. What the astrologer checks for is to note a preponderence of one or more of these. Sometimes people are absent of one particular element, which tells the astrologer much.
