Soundoff, the epic/legendary punk band based out of Lincoln, RI caught up with ovalpike.com a few months ago to do an interview. Accurately self-described as, “Rhode Island’s weirdest punk band,” these four slackers do nothing but have fun. (Note that this interview was done before Mike D’Amore joined the band).
Music Scene Examiner: Introduce yourselves, tell us who you’re influenced by, and if you could describe your personality as a stuffed animal, please do so.
Eric: I’m Eric, I play the guitar and do most of the singing. I have a wide range of influences but my top three favorite bands are The Beatles, The Sex Pistols, and Iggy Pop and the Stooges. And [laughing] I’d be a stuffed alligator because I’m aggressive.
Jarrod: I’m the bassist and I do backup vocals. My biggest influence would be Incubus. If I was a stuffed animal I’d be an octopus because I’m all hands!
Jeff: I’m Jeff. I’m the drummer, also expert Cheez-it smuggler [pulls out a giant bag of Cheez-its from under his shirt]. Actually Jarrod introduced me to some girls and there and I said, “Cheez-its?” and they loved it. I studied a lot of Incubus, Cape Verdian music, private lessons, all that @#$%. I’d be a stuffed animal dog, because their cute and soft. And even though you beat them they always come back.
MSE: Obvoiusly 401 Pride is your biggest song. Talk a little bit about that.
Eric: Jeff is the one who’s mostly responsible. We were jamming in the basement and he came up with a drum beat that was very reminiscent of one of his favorite bands, Autopilot Off, and I just came up with the chords and I wanted to write a song about Rhode Island. There’s too many songs about California, too many songs about New York, too many songs about New Orleans, Alabama, and all these different places, and there’s really none about Rhode Island. So I threw in a bunch of references to great Rhode Island things and that’s been our greatest hit. I didn’t really expect it to get as big as it did.
Jarrod: And I play single notes!
MSE: Tell us something that you really like about the Rhode Island Music scene, and something that you think needs improvement.
Jeff: I like the number of options/venues that we have.
Eric: I like the bands that we play with. We’re in the punk scene and the ska scene so we’ve met a lot of great bands like The Bitchin’ Aardvarks, and Senior Discount, and all these great different groups that we share interests with and we hang out with.
Jeff: And it’s a small state so these bands have it so much easier because they can network and there’s more people at shows because it’s not a far commute.
MSE: So what don’t you like?
Jarrod: Lots of people lie on facebook.
Eric: All the bands of different genres should just come together. I dunno, there’s not that much I would change. Just more people should come out to the shows. You’ll meet a lot of cool people.
MSE: What do you guys want people to know about Soundoff.
Eric: I want people to know that Jarrod is single.
Come check out Soundoff at Fete in Olneyville on Sunday June 3 as they share the stage with Short Handed Goal, OC45, The Down and Outs, and several others.
