“Doctor Who” fans have been given their first official look at the Doctor’s new companion, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman. Information on her character’s name and origin have not been revealed, but Jenna will make her debut during this year’s Christmas Special.
Many fans are disappointed that they will have to say goodbye to Amy and Rory, especially Amy Pond. Karen Gillan’s character is considered by many Whovians to be one of the best companions of all time. Still a likable character, Rory (Arthur Darvill) was never able to gain the same level of adoration from the fans. However, the bond between Amy Pond and the Doctor is one of the strongest we have seen, especially in the revamped series.
Since Amy has become such an important name in the “Doctor Who” universe, Whovians expect a big exit. There couldn’t be a simple parting of ways, because that would not receive a very positive response from fans of the show. Karen Gillan has promised that her exit will not only be unexpected, but very emotionally charged.
“I literally couldn’t read it without crying … It was the most highly-charged read-through I’ve ever experienced,” she told Total Film. “But I couldn’t have asked for a better exit. I don’t think it’ll be what people expect.”
Speculation continues to grow over how Karen will leave the show. Writer Steven Moffat revealed back in March that it will have to do with an encounter with the Weeping Angels. He promised that not everyone escapes the terrifying creatures alive. Whether or not this includes Amy Pond is something fans will have to keep speculating on.
It was also announced in March that Jenna-Louise Coleman will come aboard the TARDIS as the Doctor’s new companion. Local Whovians will know her best as Connie from Captain America: The First Avenger or as Annie Desmond in ABC’s “Titanic” mini-series. Now, Coleman is ready to make a name for herself in the “Doctor Who” universe.
Very little information has been made public regarding specific details on Coleman’s character, including her name and how she encounters the Doctor. However, fans present during filming in South Wales say they overheard the name ‘Clara’ on the set.
BBC may be trying to keep everything tight-lipped until the Christmas Special. The new series is set to begin this fall.
