With Fourth of July just days away, it’s a quiet start to the week on the pet scene. However, events heat up this weekend with not one but two super-sized dog events – Dog Days of Summer in Libertyville from Thursday through Sunday and PUP Fest in Chicago on Saturday and Sundy. Here’s a peek at those two cool events and more!
Tuesday, July 3
Another week of summer fun with the West Town Pup Crawl from 6 to 10 p.m. stop by the dog-friendly patios at J. Patrick’s, Clutch, Aberdeen Tap and The Match. Swing by Mahoney’s from 6 to 8 p.m. to meet the folks from Pawlosophy and the non-profit of the week – A Dog’s Day Rescue. From 8 to 9 p.m., Mahoney’s will donate proceeds from bar sales to A Dog’s Day Rescue.
Thursday, July 5 through Sunday, July 8
Leaping dogs, pet rescues, cool pet products and more will all take center stage in Libertyville this weekend for the annual Dog Days of Summer event. The event opens at noon on Thursday with a chance for local dogs to practice and try-out for the local jumping competition. Opening ceremonies are at 6 p.m. on Friday at the X-Treme Dog Park PNC Bank Parking Lot where the local dogs will jump for a title. On Saturday at 1:30 is the Pet Parade. The rest of the weekend swing by for to watch the Dock Dogs leap and perform and check out the other cool events. Pampered Pupz and a variety of other local businesses sponsor the event.
Saturday, July 7 and Sunday, July 8
Head to the Ukrainian Village for tons of fun for dogs in Chicago. Pup Fest will be debuting at West Fest this year and will feature a variety of fun activities for dogs – agility, dog tattooing, paw painting and the world’s largest dog wash – supporting five Chicago Rescues. West Fest runs from noon until 10 p.m. and the Pup Fest runs from noon until 7 p.m.
Saturday, June 7
If you’re expecting a baby and concerned about how the family dog and new baby will mesh, this is the class for you. Dogs & Storks work on dog- and baby-friendly techniques aimed a creating a smooth transition and keeping families together. The ultimate goal is to reduce the number of dogs relinquished to shelters when a baby is born into a family. The class will be at 10:30 a.m. at Bellybum Boutique in Lincoln Square.
Sunday, June 8
Come celebrate the grand opening of the new Harmony House for Cats, tour Chicago’s greenest shelter and visit with the cats in their new eco-friendly home. The Net Zero Energy facility uses smart technology to help the shelter generate more energy than they expect to use. From 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., stop in for the grand opening of the new facility and to check out the many cats needing homes. (See previous story.)
