Chilly highs, large hail, and strong tornadoes top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here events that happened on June 15.
1894 – Record heat rules on this day with Grand Rapids reaching 97°. Sault Ste. Marie also sets a record on this day with a high of 90°.
1917 – This is a cold day with records set for chilly high temperatures. Records include Grand Rapids with 55°, Muskegon 53°, Lansing 56°, Detroit 54°, Houghton Lake 56°, and Sault Ste. Marie 48°.
1943 – The steel, bulk freight George M. Humphrey collided with 5,500 ton steamer D.M. Clemson in fog and sank in the Straits of Mackinac in Lake Huron. Her recovery was the most expensive salvage job up to that time.
1960 – More than 20 houses sustain damage as a tornado hits the southern part of the city of Jackson, Michigan.
1976 – Tornadoes caused a quarter million dollars damage in Lower Michigan. In Kent County, a barn is destroyed and two houses damaged by a tornado near Cedar Springs. In Allegan and Ottawa Counties, several buildings are damaged along a twelve mile path, ending just south of Jenison. Mobile homes are damaged near Walton in Wexford County.
1979 – Golf ball sized hail (1.75 inch) fell at Hulbert, MI in Chippewa County and at Newberry in the mid-evening,
1982 – A series of strong tornadoes struck central Lower Michigan. In Gratiot County, several homes were damaged, two of them severely as a tornado moved from near Pompeii to North Star. The last F3 tornado to occur in Washtenaw County since 1950 happened on this day. The tornado moved from 5 miles west-southwest of Munith in Jackson County to 8 miles northwest of Chelsea. The tornado was 1500 feet wide, and it resulted in one death and one injury in Jackson County. Overall, 7 houses were destroyed and 15 buildings were damaged by the tornado.
2008 – A few severe thunderstorms occurred over portions of Luce and Schoolcraft counties in the afternoon. Seven to eight-inch diameter tree limbs were blown down on Ten Curves Road 8 miles southwest of Laketon at 1335 EST.
