“Everything slopes away from the mountain. Keep that in mind,” the shuttle driver told us as we approached the Broadmoor’s Mountain Golf Course.
His words of warning really didn’t matter. My husband can drive it far but tends to slice right, usually into the rough or the water. Besides a occasional straight 100-yard drive, I’m still a beginner, inconsistent on a very good day. A sloping downward course certainly wasn’t going to improve our play.
It made it much worse. Luckily, a laid-back younger couple from Denver rounded out our foursome, not a pair of super-serious amateurs. After topping, swinging, missing and driving the ball anywhere but down most of the eighteen fairways, I turned my attention away from the golf and looked around at the postcard view of Pikes Peak above and the Colorado Springs down below.
Despite the bad golf, this was still a great day. Our overnight at the Broadmoor probably had something to do with my sunny attitude.
If you’re looking for a splurge-worthy place to celebrate a special occasion, nothing beats Colorado’s most renown luxury resort, blessed by its picture-perfect location in the Springs. Check out their website at virtually anytime and you’ll find that there is a romantic escape package that the two of you can revel in before coming back to reality.
For example, if you go to their specials and packages page, current seasonal packages are shown. Right now, they include stays related to Memorial Day, spring break, summertime and their upcoming jazz festival featuring Earl Klugh.
The Broadmoor has a dizzying selection of all kinds of getaways, but the best bets for couples would be – no surprises – the romance packages. With each one, you will have champagne and scrumptious chocolate covered strawberries brought to your room, as well as a $50 breakfast credit for the next day. An upgrade to suite accommodations is available at 30% off published rates. From there, take your pick of either the bed and breakfast escape ($140-210 per person, per night, double occupancy) or the romantic getaway ($210-280 pp., per night), which includes a $180 food and beverage allowance for dinner at either the Penrose Room, Charles Court or Summit restaurants.
Do you and your love enjoy being pampered? Then choose the spa couple’s romantic hideaway. You’ll each enjoy a 70-minute Swedish massage (gratuities included) dinner at any of the resort’s fine restaurants mentioned above, and the 30% discount off suite rates ($370-440 pp, per night).
If the two of you bond over golf or tennis, choose one of those arrangements. With golf, depending on which courses are open, you’ll either play 18 holes on the lush East Course or West Course, home to four major PGA and LPGA tournaments and recipient of many travel honors. The third option is the challenging links-style Mountain Course, where we were rightfully humbled. Use of a cart and locker rooms is included in the package price ($230-385 pp. per night), as well as a $50 breakfast credit. Tennis packages are offered during the week and weekends, ranging from $200 to $210 pp., per night, double occupancy. Two daily drill clinics are offered each day, along with one hour of court time and round-robin matches on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
No matter which package you choose, your Broadmoor getaway will be something the two of you will look back upon with fond memories…even if your golf game left something to be desired.
