There are many new businesses that start each day, but KlutchClub Founder, Julie Bashkin shares her newest business and how she makes it all happen each day!
Andrea: 1. What was your inspiration to start Klutch club?
I was inspired to start KLUTCHclub because I feel that like many other people, I was very confused by the health and wellness products out there, did not know which brands to trust and was trying to figure out what was really good for me vs. what was a gimmicky trend.
I have struggled with weight and health issues for most of my life. After college I was about 30 pounds over weight, I was weak and had major back pain from scoliosis. I tried many things and failed to lose weight until I changed my lifestyle in my mid 20s. I finally lost it by having a scheduled workout routine and cooking my own meals and I greatly reduced the back pain through pilates and yoga and core strengthening exercises.
However, just as I did that, I started a corporate consulting job working 75+ hours per week and traveling. I struggled to maintain my weight. That’s when I started seeking convenient products like healthy snacks, supplements, and workouts I could take on the road with me.
I maintained my fitness levels but with a lot of time and effort spent researching the best products that could help me do that. Having been there before, I wanted my members to understand that the person curating
2. What is Klutch Club?
Klutch Club provides a box of products that turns health and wellness from a chore to an enjoyable experience and figure out how products can simplify their life and help them change their entire lifestyle. This is a risk free way to try products like this and not have to invest a lot of money to figure out what works and what does not.
3. How do you manage a start up and balance a family/relationship life?
It is extremely difficult and I cannot pretend that I have a perfect recipe for work/life balance. I am used to having to balance my career, self interests, relationship, family, friends, and community demands as my previous job required not only long hours but also a lot of travel. The start-up world is even tougher. For me the key is knowing my limitations, knowing that I just cannot do everything myself and surrounding myself with people who have more expertise, skills, and talent than I do in certain areas- work and personal life.
4. What was the hardest thing about getting started?
The hardest thing was abandoning a career. My job was fulfilling and intellectually challenging but ultimately the work was not benefiting my own initiative and it was not in line with my personal passion of health and wellness. Walking away was hard and finding myself without resources that a global firm provides was even harder. I had to find scrappy ways of getting things done without a budget and that is tough to get used to.
5. How does your health/fitness lifestyle incorporate into this new business venture?
Prior to starting, I thought having my own venture would give me flexibility in my schedule but I underestimated just how much of my life would be consumed by it (and of course that is by choice because I love almost every minute of my day!). What motivates me to work out is knowing that I am now no longer just responsible for my own health, I have to stay true to the KLUTCHclub brand, which I want to stand for authenticity and credibility and if I am asking KLUTCHclub members to lead a healthy lifestyle, I have to do the same.
