Even a Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes fairytale-like wedding in a castle can’t stay the problems that can lead to a third-marriage divorce, as the public learned on Friday.
And like many marriages that hit the rocks, the celebrity husband and wife wish to maintain their privacy as much as possible about the dissolution of their union. That becomes especially important when a child is involved, especially in a high-profile case such as this, where what the media reports can impact the offspring in more public ways than an average citizen.
Three children will be impacted due to the Cruise Holmes divorce, their 6-year-old female child Suri, as well as Cruise’s two other children—Isabella Jane and Connor Anthony–whom he adopted with his second wife, Nicole Kidman.
Suri is too young to be exposed much to the sharp tongues that can dissect the details of her parents’ divorce right now, despite her own burgeoning popularity with the press, but later, as she is older, reading about the things said about her parents’ divorce could be very challenging if the cause for the separation is revealed to be controversial.
Isabella and Connor Cruise, on the other hand, are at the age in which social media is the be all end all, so anything published about the Holmes Cruise divorce is going to hit them pretty strongly even though they’ve already weathered Tom’s divorce of their mother.
The “Mission Impossible” star and his first wife, Mimi Rogers, who were married for three years, had no children when they divorced, making it easier for them to navigate the marital court system, with no child custody issues to battle each other about.
But the “Knight and Day” star and Nicole Kidman faced this same partner hurdle in their marital union when they divorced, made even more complicated by the fact that she was three month’s pregnant at that time with their child, eventually miscarrying.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had a difficult marriage road from the onset, with the blended family issues to deal with, coupled with the age differences—he’s 49, she’s 33. Add to that the fact that they did it under the microscope of the world as Hollywood celebrities, and you have high odds against them.
In addition, the male movie star’s commitment to his Scientology faith makes the end of the TomKat marriage especially problematic for him, as it did when he and Rogers divorced, since the religious organization promotes the union between a man and a woman.
That’s probably why Katie Holmes wants the divorce off limits as much as possible in the press, with KVUE reporting that the soon to be ex-wife of one Hollywood’s most popular male star’s issued this statement through her attorney, “This is a personal and private matter” and that “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
