iPhones out. Armbands on. Hair up, down, dyed, not fried, and laid to the side. Long lines were in view, and gift bags were nowhere to be found. With temperatures reaching a little over 90 degrees, it was no wonder why Sisters where sitting at the bar sipping on ice cold drinks as they awaited CurlyNikki’s arrival at Suite C in Charlotte, NC.
Camera lights were flashing as fierce hairstyles were photographed left and right. You could hear the compliments ringing through your ears, “I love your hair! That outfit is fierce! Oh! I love your earrings!” As with any event, there are mixed reviews on who enjoyed it and who were not as pleased as others.
This meetup was the place to be if you enjoyed socializing over drinks, meeting new people, and just wanted to hang out and celebrate being natural with other Sisters. However, for some Sisters they were disappointed in the informal setting. There was not a set agenda as CurlyNikki informed the Sisters to “learn, mingle, talk to each other, touch each others’ hair…have fun and do you and enjoy yourself!” For more footage of her opening speech, watch the video above.
One mother brought her middle school daughter and was not pleased with the event as she expected “a question and answer portion, demonstrations, and tutorials.” Kym, who has attended a CurlyNikki event before said,
“The best part of this event was being surrounded by so many Naturals and hanging with my Sisters. As for the event itself I was very displeased. This was not a “MEET-UP” as we know it or as stated within the invite. It was just a gathering and photo opp in my opinion. While UR Curly provided a give-away, there was really nothing more. The venue was WAAAYYY too small to accommodate so many people. Many attendees were forced to sit/stand outside in the heat where you could not hear what was going on. Some left before or just after Nikki arrived. If you were inside, you sat at the bar, stood up or sat in the limited seating area all crushed with people. Good music, limited food (although I ate before coming), loads of hair styling ideas, but that’s it. I didn’t like it and really felt bad for Marci, Satisfied and others who drove 2 or more hours for this “GATHERING”. CurlyNikki has seen me twice “My first and My Last [time]”. Unorganized is putting it mildly.”
Although most meetups are more informative and intimate, this type of gathering is more for the Sister who simply want to socialize and be surrounded with positive women who simply enjoy being natural.
