“The X Factor” U.S. judge Demi Lovato took her feisty relationship with fellow judge Simon Cowell to a crass level when she spit mints into his hand during “X Factor” auditions at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island, on June 29, 2012. Auditions also took place there on June 27 and June 28, 2012.
A fan-run Twitter account named LovatoOnTour has been giving updates of the Providence auditions on Twitter. LovatoOnTour reported about the auditions on June 29, 2012:
“Simon Cowell: “Ok, let’s go to Demi.” || Demi: “I have like 12 mints in my mouth *Spits mints into Simon’s hand*”
“Simon Cowell called Demi a brat after she spit 12 mints into his hands.”
“Simon Cowell gave a fan the mints Demi spat into his hands.”
It has been widely reported that Cowell and Lovato have been clashing and arguing during “X Factor” auditions. Sometimes their banter is playful, while other times it is mean-spirited. Lovato and Britney Spears joined the show’s judging panel in May 2012, as replacements for Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul. “The X Factor” executive producer Cowell and Epic Records chairman/CEO Antonio “L.A.” Reid remain judges on the panel from the show’s first season.
Even though she is the youngest person on the show’s judging panel, 19-year-old Lovato has been getting great reviews from critics and fans who have attended “X Factor” auditions, where she has been praised for her “tell it like it is” style and sense of humor. Even though this hand-spitting incident is pretty crude, it probably won’t damage her reputation, since Lovato does not have an “America’s sweetheart” image. She has been very open with the public about battling her personal demons, including substance abuse, bulima, self-harming and bipolar disorder. The general consensus is that the public respects her for being honest about these problems, rather than having the more typical celebrity attitude of hiding or denying these problems from the public.
In other “X Factor” audition news from Providence, the show released a video of Lovato and Spears, 30, talking about their “X Factor” experiences, including how they think they bring “girl power” to the judging panel, how they react to cute male contestants, and what they think of their “X Factor” co-workers.
Lovato said: “Everyone’s really great, except Simon. We have fun together. He does tease me a lot, but I give it back to him. I don’t mind. He’s sometimes not very nice to me, but I have fun with him … I grew up listening to [Britney Spears] so it’s really awesome to be able to sit next to her on a panel.”
Spears said of Lovato: “I totally admire her work and everything she’s done … Today I didn’t even know what is considered a good rapper, because I don’t listen to rap music. I was like, ‘Is that good?’”
Lovato added, “I was like, ‘I don’t know. He talks fast and he sounds good, so yeah.’”
In the video, Lovato once again denied rumors that she is dating One Direction’s Niall Horan, who is 18. The rumors began after they both said in interviews that they had crushes on each other. Later, it was revealed in the media that Lovato and Horan have been communicating on a regular basis.
When asked if she is dating Horan, Lovato replied: “No, I’m not. He’s really sweet and he’s one of my really good friends now. But no, I’m single at the moment and plan to be for quite a long time. I need to focus on my career and myself and my well-being before I think about getting in a relationship with anyone.”
The second season of “The X Factor” U.S. premieres in two parts on September 12 and September 13, 2012, at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time on Fox.
