One of our great challenges in Gifted Education is attaining understanding of what giftedness really is with the politicians, general teachers, administrators, media, and especially the general public. Misunderstanding and misdiagnoses can cause serious problems for gifted parents and their children. But in a nanny state it can be devastating.
A parent of gifted children in Denmark posted this yesterday on an international Gifted Education blog. English is not her primary language, so I did not make any corrections to her plea.

Just to let you all know our lokal municipality decided last week that I am now to be classified under a new law reserved for so called closed families. A closed family is a family where there are certain child abuse and neglect is a problem and move to do home visits and have ruled to come unannounced.
The new law allowing this starts on 1. july. I feel my life is invaded, the privacy of our home not safe anymore and legally will have to allow CPS in when ever they knock and identify themselves. At any time.
So, that’s what you get for standing up for your rights and when the System protects itself.
My daughter cannot go to college since the social worker refused to accept that plan. They sabotaged it all the way and by the time I got that through the complaints system college will be over. It’s summer now and the whole system is on holiday til college opens – I tried my best and we failed. She is classified as “tired of school child” and they will send her to either local school or project for second generation foreigners where she can learn to become a functioning memeber of the happy society.
My son is on his way to a special class for mentally challenged and abused children. The outcome of that I experienced in 2008 and 2010 and it was not fun repairing him. He made no friends there. But we might be lucky since he has a freind that’s through luck met another GT kiddo in his special class.
Moral of the story is if you are Gifted in a country with no services make sure you keep it well hidden. If violence is involved move away quietly or stick it out – a complaint will cost more than you can imagine, especially where whistleblowers are not wellcome.
I suspect they have used the law illegally but the System will agree to disagree with me in a year or so’s time and by then we dont need school anymore. I am as of now still waiting to hear the outcome of a very similar complaint made in february 2010 … so history does indeed repeat itself. I was stupid enough to think otherwise.
Either one of the options she mentions will not in any way provide a solution to the children’s intellectual, social or emotional problems. It has been reported that Denmark is one of the leading countries in the world in educating their regular student population, and I don’t doubt this. But this goes to show there is a very wide separation between the services provided to ordinary students and misdiagnosed gifted students.
