Bethesda Softworks, a ZeniMax Media announced today (5/30) that they will be releasing a re-mastered version of DOOM 3 BFG Edition which features DOOM 3 and the Resurrection of Evil add-on pack. Slated for a fall 2012 release, DOOM 3 will be released on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
The re-mastered DOOM 3 will be more than just a simple graphic overhaul. It will also include never before seen levels titled “The Lost Missions” (original name, id) giving players hours of extra game play. Developer id Software has also performed some modern day updates to keep DOOM 3 inline with current day games. Proper duel stick analog controls, multiplayer options, 5.1 surround sound, and full 3D support are all being included to enhance the player’s experience. Achievement and trophy junkies will be happy to know that both Xbox 360 Achievements and PlayStation 3 trophies will make it into the game.
Unfortunately some other current trends such as check points are making it into the game. I understand the developers need to make the game more accessible to the masses, but consider a first person shooter that gives players an incentive to stay alive instead of holding their hand through the entire experience? Also, an “amour-mounted flashlight” will be included, helping players in dark locations. This is DOOM: it should give players that dark, moody “crap-my-pants” feeling, so why nerf the experience with a worthless attachment that can be used at all times? Just please keep regenerative health away from this game id, it’s all I ask.
Regardless of the potential downfalls, id Software’s Technical Director John Carmack had this to say:
“DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release,” said Carmack. “Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it.”
DOOM 3 BFG Edition will also include the original DOOM and DOOM 2 games, rounding out an already impressive package. For anyone that hasn’t played a DOOM game, they should; this series basically pioneered the first person shooter along side “Wolfenstein 3D”, and is worth checking out.
