Jane has faced big corporations as she defends the little guy/gal before and this week she does it again with grace and sass. She takes on a discount chain fortune five hundred company that terminated an employee without cause. However there is more to this story than meets the eye. While battling the big bad wolf she learns about Nicki’s (Kim Kardashian) unscrupulous past and that Owen has a sister who really despises her. Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva” episode titled “Freak Show” seems to have normal obstacles that Jane should be able to overcome with ease on the surface; but like with anything in life, when you dig deeper it becomes messy.
While defending her client Jane learns that her personality changed after a car accident left her with injuries and her sister dead. The client told Jane that she believed her sister’s soul was in her body. This gave Jane goose bumps, she was excited to know she was not the only “freak” out there. After changing their plea three times; wrongful termination, whistle blower, and wrongful death Jane was able to win the case; get a settlement, her client’s pension, and her client’s job back. Luke used this as an opportunity to watch his charge at work. He advised her to dig deeper into her client’s medical records before jumping to conclusions about another soul jumping into her sister’s body. She doesn’t do this so Luke does and discovers her personality change was due to a cerebral hemorrhage not soul jumping so she was back to feeling freakish. Luke helped with that by telling her stories of complete strangers that used their “freaky” assets to make them successful.
During the court case Jane finds out that Owen’s sister Olivia despises (hate is too nice of a word) her but Jane has no clue why. Owen and Jane invite Olivia to a dinner party to get an idea. The uncomfortable dinner party explodes (thanks to her choice in food) Olivia bursts out of the apartment and tells Owen he should have nothing to do with this woman. Jane follows her out to her car and tells her she has memory gaps in her memory and she truly does not remember what she did to upset Olivia. Olivia tells her a horrid story of Jane number one breaking her good friend’s heart in college. The retelling of the story seems to be healing for both of them and in the bonding moment she tells Olivia that she loves Owen her brother. Owen is behind them listening to the conversation and he replies with the fact that he loves her and is just happy she was the first to tell him.
Stacey has her own issues she is dealing with regarding the opening of her “pakery” (a bakery that makes a dessert that is a hybrid of pies and cakes) and her new business partner Nicki (Kim Kardashian). Jane tries to warn Stacey about the warrants and alias’ Nicki has from her past which only drives a further wedge between the roomies. Stacey gives her entire life saving ($5000) to Nicki and that night Nicki appears to have skipped town, burned her cell phone and cashed her cashier’s check. FYI the story Nicki told Stacey about the warrants and alias’ was that she hooked up with a very bad boyfriend and has been on the run ever since, knowing “Drop Dead Diva” this may come to be true in future episodes or not so we will have to wait and see. In the meantime Jane offers to be Stacey’s new business partner and all becomes right with the world again.
