The world has definitely changed since the ’90s. Instead of playing outside all day long with friends. Children of the new century hold them selves hostage inside playing video games, computer games and social networking.
We all know that a quiet child means something is happening that should not be. As parents we love the peace and quiet every once and a while, but at what cost?
It is amazing how fast children are learning to use the computer.
Around the age of two years old, a child is able to manipulate a computer mouse. Is that the best age to teach them how to use a computer though?
It does not begin or end with a computer; phones are also in that category.
Children learn from their parents and to be honest, most adults are consumed with our computers and smart phones. They are attached to our hip where our children used to be. We don’t go anywhere with out them (the phone that is).
It is not all our fault though; we see on our phone the infamous
“app store,” there are tons of games that are made for children of all ages.
It entices us to download them and see if our children can play that particular game. We all want the smartest child so we can brag to our friends. Think about this if you will.
Does smart phone = smart kid?
It is important that children and teenagers learn how to use the computer; it is a necessity in our world, as we know it.
Children should learn other important factors before they attach their own smart phone to their hip.
First, interaction with other children their age. This is an important factor in a child’s life because they will have to interact with people their whole life. You cannot have a conversation via text or Facebook all the time.
Second, exercise is also very important. P.E in school 30 minutes a day just is not enough exercise. Running, jumping, playing outside using only their imagination is a huge factor in growing up.
Third, team sports combines the first two factors mentioned above. Learning how to play on a team will help with a child’s self-esteem and learn how to share the spotlight.
These few things listed above will help children be well-rounded adults. There will be many things our children will have to face in life while they are adults. Teaching them to converse like human beings using their mouths and their voices, not their fingers on a keyboard can be one the best things we can do for our children.
Let us all put down our gadgets and teach our children how to play.
