The NJ Etan Patz suspect Pedro Hernandez and Georgia’s Ryan Brunn have some things in common according to case details coming out on the 33 year old cold case murder today.
First, both men used a lure to draw the child of their fascination, with Hernandez telling police he favored candy in Patz’s case and Brunn choosing to use the roller skate of his victim Jorelys Rivera.
The second commonality between the two killers living at geographical ends on the East Coast is both men worked near the crime scenes where both victims went missing. Brunn was a maintenance employee of the apartment complex where Rivera lived and Hernandez worked for a grocer in the SoHo area, where Patz went missing en route to school.
Another similarity between the two killers if the strangulation and stabbing that occurred. Brunn admitted, and evidence supported that the 7-year-old Rivera experienced both methods of death due to strangulation not killing her at first.
Both strangulation and stabbing have been reported as the methods of death for Etan Patz too in the news today, but it remains unclear until police confirm if both methods were used or not.
Body disposal by both killers is similar as well, with reports that Hernandez attempted to discard the remains in a box, while Brunn wheeled his victim’s in a golf cart to the apartment complex’s trash compactor.
Neither man willingly came forward during the days following the disappearance of either child, but both were found out in the end. In Rivera’s case it was a neighbor in the complex that reinforced police suspicion about Brunn; with Hernandez it is alleged one of “his family members pointed investigators in his direction.”
While Ryan Brunn was aged 20 at the time of his crime, the 51-year-old Pedro Hernandez would have been almost that age (18) at the time of Patz’s murder.
Ryann Brunn did eventually confess to the murder of the Georgia child Jorelys Rivera this year, but he went on to commit suicide thereafter, while in jail.
Pedro Hernandez has confessed to police, as well, with them videotaping that confession–which is the same thing the GBI did while interviewing Brunn during their investigation, too.
It has been reported that Etan Patz’s alleged killer cried as he recounted for police what he did to Patz 33 years ago so he might opt for the same exit from his predicament that Brunn did if authorities don’t take more stringent precautions against it.
In a sad commentary about victim families after such a murder, it was reported a week ago that Jorelys River’s mother, Joselinne Rivera-Ruiz, was arrested after a dispute erupted between her and her partner Maria Americano, who both resided together in Canton.
