While talk of who should play Christian Grey in the upcoming film adaptation of E.L. James’ “Fifty Shades of Grey” is always a hot topic of discussion, fans of the bestselling book trilogy need not forget who may be cast as the leading lady either, Anastasia Steele.
In recent “Fifty Shades” movie news, Lucy Hale of “Pretty Little Liars” fame has once again put her name out for fan consideration this week in the upcoming take to the big screen. In a new interview posted this Thursday, Hale sat down to talk about her interest in “Fifty Shades of Grey,” including her hope of possibly being cast the racy—but rather lucky, many women would agree—role of Anastasia Steele alongside an unknown Christian Grey.
Would Lucy Hale of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ play a good Anastasia Steele?
Unsurprisingly, most female talk and news this weekend will be about a certain cast of male strippers starring in “Magic Mike,” a movie already given positive critic reviews for both the muscle and heart. Yet recent online poll results of who should play Christian Grey in the “Fifty Shades” movie had some down and dirty attention of its own.
During a recent interview this week with MTV News over her future goals to release a new music album in the country music genre, actress Lucy Hale also revealed her take on the “Fifty Shades” phenomenon and everyone’s favorite innocent college grad, Anastasia Steele.
“I’m only on ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ right now,” quotes Hale, talking about the second novel in E.L. James’ controversial trilogy (followed by the third installment to review, “Fifty Shades Freed”). “I just get flustered talking about it, so year, I’m on that train.”
Hale was also asked her opinion of some fans wanting to see her cast as the lead role, or at least part of the movie adaptation itself.
“People have said that [I should be cast as Ana], but others have also said [I should star as] her little sister instead, which I think could also make sense … Because I do look a little young for Ana, but what a big role to take on! I’m really curious to see how it’s all going to [happen].”
‘Fifty Shades’ movie roles would take actresses in different career directions
While this would certainly be the most mature role the ‘Pretty Little Liars’ star has been cast in so far were she to get the part, Lucy Hale added that the part would start a whole new chapter in her life, acting-wise, and she is more than “ready” to take that on.
It is true that whoever is chosen for the parts of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, the lucky actors would need not only chemistry and sex appeal, but a confidence and readiness to exert that sense of control and dark character complexity on the big screen.
“I really am ready to take a step and do something a little more risky … but it’s a fine line,” finished Hale with a smile. “I don’t know how to review where that fine line lies, but I’m definitely ready to explore the darker side of my abilities [as an actress].”
Do you think Lucy Hale would make a good Anastasia Steele opposite Christian Grey? Some other popular choices at the moment seem to be Emilia Clark, Emmy Rossum, Alexandra Daddario, Amanda Seyfried, Alexis Bledel and Emma Roberts (who has personally expressed interest in the role), though this is by no means a comprehensive list of casting candidates.
What sometimes makes “Fifty Shades of Grey” so interesting is how different fans of the series and independent readers can picture entirely different people in their mind’s eye for a particular role. Hopefully actors eventually confirmed for the roles will fulfill those expectations.
