Ah, Florida. The mere thought of it conjures dreams of sun, sand and surf, the House That Disney built, citrus fruit out the wazoo and bikinis and retirees in abundance. It also brings forth unhappy memories of the famous election of 2000 that brought us all Bush-Cheney and the Neo-Cons.
Remember that election? Chads were hanging in abundance like low-hanging fruit, and when they were counted Little Lord Bush was elected over Al Gore by 537 votes, and the rest as they say, was history.
At the time, a significant contributor to the election result happened to be Governor Jeb Bush. You see, the Jebster is Little Lord Bush’s brother; and in the run-up to that election Jeb championed ‘cleansing’ the voter rolls in Florida to the tune of 180,000 names being removed, according to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show.
The result would change the course of the nation, it’s military and it’s political conscience.
Hold on tight to your voter registration card and citizenship papers, because The State That Can’t Vote Straight is again in the national spotlight, for all the wrong reasons.
As we approach a presidential election that is for nothing short of the nation’s soul, Florida Governor Rick Scott—he who looks like Jim Carrey’s Fire Marshall Bill character from the television show ‘Living Color’—is leading a Republican GOP voter suppression effort that is designed to flip a state President Obama won in 2008 into the win column for Mitt Romney in 2012.
The governor of course argues that the purge requirement is within the state’s constitution; yet the accuracy and timing are highly suspect.
As reported by ThinkProgress and a variety of local and national news outlets:
“Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) has ordered the state to purge all “non-citizens” from voting rolls prior to November’s election. But that list compiled by the Scott administration is so riddled with errors that , in Miami-Dade county alone, hundreds of U.S. citizens are being told they can’t vote”.
Disturbingly, Florida is not the only state in the union to be blatantly manipulating the eligible voter pool in order to steal the election. The Fair Elections Legal Network reported in a commentary that:
“…many states have passed legislation recently that create barriers to voting instead of working to expand the franchise to more Americans. Since the beginning of 2011, 176 bills that restrict voting have been introduced in 41 states. Georgia congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis called these measures “poll taxes by another name.”
So why has the GOP resorted to stealing votes from the electoral cookie jar?
It’s simple: the Party Formerly Known As The Party of Lincoln bet the farm in their dealings with President Obama that the economy would remain in the crapper, and that they could come riding to the rescue and save the nation from the tan man in the White House with the strange name.
Remember when Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell vowed that his party’s sole obsession would be “…the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president”?
Florida’s governor is just the latest enabler of the GOP’s zeal to rule at any cost whether they have to lie, cheat or steal to get to the prize, rather than responsibly and honestly represent the will of the voting public.
