This past weekend was a great weekend for a walk. It just so happens that my walk was at the Natural Bridge in Natural Bridge, Virginia. This location is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
The Natural Bridge has three main areas to visit. They have the caverns, which are over 200 feet deep. They are the deepest caverns on the east coast of the United States.
They have the Wax Museum, and you get to see the King, Elvis Presley. Yes of course, he was wearing his sunglasses.
Then there is the natural bridge. When you first see it, you will be amazed at how big this rock formation is.
In between all of this, there is the lost river, a butterfly room that you can see the butterflies and hold them. At the end of the Cedar Creek Trail, you will get to see and enjoy the waterfall.
For those of you that like to buy souvenirs, there is a large gift shop. You can by ice cream for your sweet tooth and if you need more, you can buy hot dogs, hamburgers and a few other fast food items at the restaurant near the bridge. While your eating, you can sit beside a creek that runs by the restaurant.
The property is privately owned and was first bought by Thomas Jefferson for a mere $2.00 at today’s prices.
Wear or take your walking shoes, all tours with the exception of the caverns are self guided tours and you walk through all of them. It is not a strenuous walk, and there are plenty of benches to rest and just enjoy the beauty of nature.
The only reason that this does not get a five star rating was because of the light show. After waiting for two hours for the light show to begin, it was very disappointing. The light show started at 9:00 p.m. The sound was terrible and you could not hear the narration. The lights that were used looked like colored floodlights that were illuminating different parts of the bridge. After a very short amount of time, the large crowd that had gathered for the show started to leave.
It is a good one-day trip from the Piedmont area of North Carolina. Plan of driving a little over 3 hours and about 173 miles if you travel from the Asheboro, N.C. area. The Natural Bridge is located at 15 Appledore Lane, Natural Bridge, Virginia, just off of I-81. Their website list the hours that the park is open.
The ticket prices are $28.00 per adult and for children ages 5 years old to 12 years old it is $18.00 per ticket. These prices are to see all the attractions. There are other prices if you do not want to see but one or two attractions. You can visit their website for that price information.
Have fun, and it does not matter where you go, just be safe.
