During their panel today at Anime Expo 2012 FUNimation Entertainment announced the acquisition of a ton of new series for North American release, including “Eureka 7: Astral Ocean”, “Appleseed XIII” and “Aria the Scarlet Ammo”.
“Aria the Scarlet Ammo” is directed by Takashi Watanabe, best known for his work on “Ikki Tousen” and “Shakugan no Shana”. The series follows Kinji, a junior at a high school for mercenaries who wants nothing more than to live a normal life. This isn’t possible however because of his hidden condition, he becomes a skilled killer when he is turned on by the female form, which peaks the interest of a transfer student who becomes set on making him her partner. FUNimation has acquired the broadcast, home entertainment, streaming, and mobile rights to the complete series.
The publisher also announced they have acquired the broadcast, home entertainment, and mobile rights to the Keitaro Motonaga (Katanagatari) directed series, “Jormungand”. The series takes anime fans to the seedy underbelly of the world’s arms market as it follows the journey of a child soldier and a ruthless arms dealer.
Another series that FUNimation acquired the broadcast, home entertainment, streaming and mobile right to is “Blood-C”, as well as the movie “Blood-C: The Last Dark”. The titles are co-produced by Production I.G. and Clamp, they follow the clumsy Saya Kisaradi, a young girl who spends her days as a normal schoolgirl and at night is tasked with protecting her town from dangerous monsters.
FUNimation has also acquired the broadcast, home entertainment, streaming and mobile rights to the Manglobe produced and Sayo Yamamoto directed, “Michiko & Hatchin”. The show follows Michiko, an escaped prisoner who rescues an abused girl named Hatchin. The two set out to find a man that ties both of their pasts together, all the while running from the police and Hachin’s abusive foster parents.
Another announcement made was that the publisher acquired the broadcast, home entertainment and streaming rights for the Production I.G. series, “Appleseed XIII”. The series follows Deunan Knotts, a former LAPD SWAT member who along wither her cyborg partner, Brialeos, runs a special military force consisting of Bioroids, cloned humans. The group is tasked with protecting the city, namely from a terrorist group called the Argonauts, whose leader, Al Ceides, has resurfaced.
In “Ikki Tousen” related news FUNimation also announced the acquisition of the broadcast, home entertainment, streaming, and mobile rights to “Ikki Tousen – Great Guardians” and “Ikki Tousen – Xtreme Xecutor”. For those of you wondering “Ikki Tousen – Great Guardians” and “Ikki Tousen – Xtreme Xecutor” are the third and fourth seasons of the popular fan service filled action/comedy series.
During the panel FUNimation also announced the acquisition of two new simulcasts for fans to enjoy, “Binbougami ga!” and “Aesthetica of a Rouge Hero”. More details about the simulcasts can be expected soon.
“Binbougami ga!” tells the story of a girl named Sakura, who has absorbed too much “happy energy” from those around her and because of this causes an energy imbalance in the world. To help restore balance to the world Momiji, the Poverty God, sets out to take away Sakura’s ability to absorb the energy, but will the plan work?
“Aesthetica of a Rouge Hero” adds a new twist on the idea of “happily ever after”. It follows Ohtorizawa Akatsuki, a hero who finds out that his greatest adventure starts after his journey ends.
