So, by now everyone should be aware of the growing obesity problem in our country and across the globe. A recent story posted by the BBC says that this issue presents a serious challenge to our survival on the planet.
But not because of overpopulation, but because of something called “biomass,” according to a study published in the journal BMC Public Health. Says researcher Ian Roberts:
“When it comes down to it — it’s not how many mouths there are to feed, it’s how much flesh there is on the planet.”
And the United States contributes a huge amount of flesh: North America has only 6 percent of the word’s population, but accounts for about 33 percent of its obesity! The study points out that if every country were as “fat” as America, it would be comparable to having an extra billion people on the planet. Now, THAT’S a lot of mouths to feed!
So, what do we do about it? Well, as in most “macro” problems, the solutions must start on a “micro” level. In other words, each of us must do out best to stay trim and healthy!
Luckily, it’s summer in South Florida — which means lots of daylight hours and fewer crowds to fight in order to get out there and get moving! Here are a few suggestions:
- Try a cheap gym membership. Many local facilities are offering deals in order to keep their membership levels up during the dog days of summer. Just try entering “gym membership deals” and your ZIP code into a search engine, and numerous opportunities should pop up!
- Recruit a friend or neighbor to start a do-it-yourself fitness program: Walking or biking the neighborhood before or after work, say, or going to the beach to walk or swim there.
- And if you don’t have anyone who could be a workout buddy, try joining one of the many meetups in our area that focus on fitness. This is a great way to participate in activities you like and also to meet like-minded people! If you go to Meetup.com, you’ll see that there are HUNDREDS of groups in our area in the categories “health and well-being,” “fitness,” “outdoors and adventure,” and “sports and recreation.” Here are a few to provide inspiration:
Healthy Chicks — started by a regular gal to maintain her recent weight loss and meet some other cool, healthy chicks!
Sunset Yoga on the Beach. The name says it all!
45-Plus Walks and Hikes. This group, meant for Baby Boomers and older (but certainly note restrictive!) explores our many parks and nature walks in South Florida.
Wanna Do Outdoors: an active group for the truly adventurous!
So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and get moving!
