Float the phrase “East Bay jazz” out there and many fans’ reactions never wander beyond the borders of Oakland and Berkeley.
There’s good reason for that, given those cities’ size, cultural scenes and proximity to San Francisco. That said, there is jazz to be found in the East Bay’s hinterlands as well.
Myself, I’ve always had a warm spot in my heart for the San Ramon Library’s concert series. There are a number of reasons for that, not the least of which is that San Ramon was my initial home when I moved to Northern California from the Midwest nigh on 30 years ago. Then there’s also the fact I appreciate the efforts involved in bringing this great music to a locale where it otherwise might not exist, let alone flourish.
Indeed, the library is one of Contra Costa County’s leading jazz resources, as its website informs.
Whether you are novice or knowledgeable about jazz, you’ll enjoy browsing and borrowing any of the over 3,000 items devoted to the history and present day enjoyment of jazz. The San Ramon Library Jazz Collection includes videos, music CDs, books – including biography, history of early jazz through today’s artists, along with local and international artists. All items are available to borrow within the Contra Costa County Library, and are available for interlibrary loan through participating “Link+” libraries in California.
This year’s series showcases some of the Bay Area’s top vocalists. And, while tickets don’t go on sale until August, it’s never too early to get these events down in your calendar. Proceeds, naturally enough, benefit the library’s ongoing efforts to foster jazz in the East Bay. Here is the 2012 lineup.
September 21: Clairdee
September 28: Ed Reed
October 12: Daria with Dave Rocha
November 2: Jamie Davis
