So often we tend to get so involved in the celebrating of a holiday or just living our daily lives that we forget the sustainer of us all. Our God and Savior Jesus Christ truly is our sustainer. He most assuredly was on the minds of our forefathers as they celebrated the first Independence Day.
Americans say we want God to ‘bless the U.S.A.’, but we so often go about our lives without him. How sad that must make him. ‘Oh magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.’ Psalm 34:3.
The God of the Bible is not just an object of religion watching from a distance and not involved. No, Jesus the God of the Bible is very interested and taking action on our behalf. Psalm 33:18-19 says, ‘Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.’ The key words here are, ‘upon them that fear him‘.
The Lord is watching and ready to take action to deliver our souls as a nation and individually. He cares so much he is ready to deliver us from one of the most basic things, and that is lack of food as Psalm 33:19 says. Famine is almost always associated with judgment. God warned Egypt of punishment of war, famine and pestilence in Jeremiah 44:13, ‘For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence:’God did not hold back punishment to his chosen nation, Israel, when it was needed, just like a father corrects his children because he loves them. So, if God would not hold back punishment to his own chosen people, Egypt at that time understood God meant business.
The children of Israel did however understand where their help came from. ‘ If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help.’ 2 Chronicles 20:9.
The United States is a nation who in their beginning understood that their God was the Lord Jesus Christ. They depended on him greatly and God blessed this nation. It remained number one for two hundred years. Only recently has it begun to fall and only in the past 100 years has it begun to leave the God of it’s fathers. Knowing that God will punish them just as he did Israel, are the people turning to God in response? Are they repenting of their sins and looking to him for their sustainment?
‘Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought; he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. The Lord looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men. From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth. He fashioned their hearts alike; he considereth all their works. There is no king saved by the multitude of an host; a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. An horse is a vain thing for safety; neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. Behold the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.’ Psalm 33:8-21
The west has been a shining jewel when it comes to religion and the spreading of the gospel of Jesus Christ. If America wants to always be that shining jewel before the Lord and have God’s blessing, it’s imperative that believers repent of their wicked ways in the United States and ask God to ‘Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.’Psalm 33:22. It’s important to admit our part in the wicked direction this nation has taken and stand up. Stop bowing to the lies of this present age. Stop compromising and ask God to make us aware of sins and repent. It all begins with the individual. ‘If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.’ 2 Chronicles7:14.
