“Grimm” started in the fall of 2011 on NBC and by the time it wrapped up its first season in May 2012 it had brought viewers 22 episodes filled with creatures never before imagined except in fairy tales. Just as the main character, Nick Burkhardt was learning about his ancestry as a Grimm, the fans that tuned in every week were introduced to a wide array of guest stars portraying Wesen covered in scales, those with whiskers and others who had the power to say whether one creature lived or died.

Episodes 12-16 dealt with all sorts of fairy tales; those that are well-known and those more obscure. Here are the guest stars who appeared in those five episodes during “Grimm,” season 1.
Nick dealt with an underground fight club known as the Lowen Games in episode 12 in an episode based on the story of “Androcles and the Lion.” Various Wesen fought to the death in a cage and even Monroe was kidnapped in an effort to see him go head to head with another fairy tale monster. Leo Taymor was the Lowen, a lion-like Wesen, who was running the Lowen Games. Even Nick’s commanding officer, Captain Renard knew about these illegal activities. Leo Taymor was portrayed by Nick Chinlund. Chinlund has guest starred on other television shows like “Human Target,” “Law and Order” and “Criminal Minds.”
Episode 13 brought the viewers a story based on the tale of “The Master Thief.” Searching for three mysterious coins, burglars held up a jewelry store. The owner swallowed the coins which promptly killed him. Several police officers were drawn by the coins’ power including Captain Renard, before they were secretly stashed in Aunt Marie’s trailer by Nick. The master thief is this story was a man named Soledad Marquesa, a Schakal. This jackal-like Wesen with pointy ears was portrayed by Jordi Caballero. Caballero has had television roles on “Alias” and “Nip/Tuck,” as well as a role in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”
The Wesen Nick was dealing with in episode 14 was a real hot number. The story of “The Two Brothers” was transformed for this episode of “Grimm” into a tale of a Daemonfeuer, a fire-breathing dragon-like creature. Juliette was kidnapped by this Wesen and was rescued by Monroe. Danielle Panabaker portrayed this female Daemonfeuer who seemed to make Nick a little hot under the collar. Fans of the Disney Channel may remember Panabaker from her roles in “Stuck in the Suburbs” and “Read and Weep.” She has also appeared in the films “Mr. Brooks” and “Friday the 13th.”
The fifteenth episode of “Grimm” dealt with illegal drug use among Wesen. Nick and Hank were called to the scene of an exotic tea and spice shop to discover Freddy Calvert (he also appeared in the “Organ Grinder” episode) murdered. Nick and Monroe then enter a Trauminsel looking for the J-smoking murderers. This ‘island of dreams’ is equivalent to a human crack house. One of the killers is Clint Vickers, a Skalengeck. Skalengeck are creatures like lizards. Vickers was played by Paul Glazier. Glazier has appeared as a guest star on “Leverage” and has appeared in several film shorts.
Episode 16 of “Grimm” used the story of “The Nightingale” as inspiration to tell the story of a troubled married couple, the Steinkellers. The husband is a Klaustreich, a jerk of a cat-like creature and the wife is a Seltenvogel, a delicate bird-like Wesen. Once in her lifetime, a female Seltenvogel produces a Unbezahlbar, a golden egg, in her throat. Tim Steinkeller is force feeding his wife a horrible nutrition shake to make the egg larger. Tim Steinkeller is played by Josh Randall. Randall has had regular roles on “Ed,” “Scrubs” and “Criminal Minds.”
