Women in the Midwest are pretty no fuss, no muss. So when it comes to wearing foundation on their faces, especially in summer, most are quite reluctant if not downright opposed to it. Well, what if you could have something that would do all the things that foundation can do and more, but not feel like you are wearing anything, and have it last all day? You would probably say “bring it on!”
All the rage in Asia for several years, Beauty Balms, or BB Creams as they are sometimes referred to, came on the scene in the US this spring. They invoke a tint of a color that adjusts to almost any skin tone, all the while improving texture and tone, giving it anti-aging benefits and super light feeling coverage. What’s the difference between a beauty balm and a tinted moisturizer you ask? A tinted moisturizer is really just a sheerer version of a foundation, and it usually doesn’t multi-task the way a beauty balm does. BB creams act as a primer, filling in pores and fine lines, smoothing out the surface. It also covers and conceals any blemishes or imperfections, due to the fact that it is more opaque than a tinted moisturizer, although weightless on skin. It also hydrates and plumps up skin, even though oil free.
Three of the best beauty balms are Stila Stay All Day 10-in-1 Beauty Balm, Bocsia BB Cream SPF 27 PA++, and Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream. Stila’s smooth as silk feeling balm perfects skin instantly, while tiny little micro spheres help fill in pores and fine lines, reducing wrinkle depth. Dries down to a semi-matte finish. It has tripeptides, bamboo and pea extracts to help diminish existing fine lines. The only thing it doesn’t have is an SPF, but some women like a higher physical SPF. Stila’s Beauty Balm retails for $38. Boscia’s BB Cream is a non descript color that adjusts to skin on contact, and while not quite as velvety smooth as Stila’s, it has a very nice texture. It has a slightly dewy look to it. Containing abyssine which soothes skin, and jojoba leaf to provide anti-oxidant benefits and fight premature aging, it’s a great choice for someone who would prefer to have the SPF. It retails for $38 also. Garnier’s Skin Perfector is a lower cost alternative to the other two, providing nice, smooth coverage, along with vitamin C and minerals to promote healthy skin. It creates a slightly dewy glow, and carries an SPF of 15. Garnier is priced at about $12.
This new hybrid of skincare/makeup is a perfect summer solution to that “I don’t want to wear foundation” dilemma.
