When reading news from abroad, it is useful to understand it through the lens of local geography. Such was the case when reading news about a Grad rocket attack on Beer Sheva that landed as kids entered school on Wednesday morning.
That description of the hour when rockets landed was poignant. My home is within eyesight of the nearest, public school . I live within a short walk to three other public school buildings and at least three private schools. If my neighborhood had been transported to Beer Sheva , rockets would have been falling here as I leave for work and kids in my complex walk to class. It is downright scary.
Lets examine the situation diffefrently but still applying the Columbus analogy. Columbus is centrally located within Ohio. Imagine malcontents living just over the Indiana Ohio or West Virginia Ohio border bombarding our fair city for some slight. Or worse, consider that those malcontents were attacking us because the day before Columbus police raided their stronghold and arrested hooligans who had viciously attacked Columbus repeatedly over the course of many months.
Columbus police rarely pursue hooligans in Indiana or West Virginia. Israel’s Defense Force, though, has had frequent just cause to punish Hamas for its constant belligerence. Earlier this week, in a break with its usual public quiet about specific attacks, Hamas publicly acknowledged its sponsorship of recent rocketing. IDF is to the State of Israel and to Beer Sheva as the Columbus Police are to us in this state capital. If anything, Ohio is considerably larger than Israel, and this fair city is a bit further from either state border than Beer Sheva is from the Gaza Strip.
Still what more does this openly Jew hating Hamas want? The occupation of the Gaza Strip ended more than five years ago. Roads link the strip not only to supply routes through the Jewish State but also to Egypt in the South. Support from foreign investors and nations is coming in huge amounts, and yet Gazans continue to live in squalor.
What do these Hamas bureaucrats and terrorists want? They want to shift focus from infernal, internal issues, to accuse Israel of apartheid, and to forbid Israel the God given, Darwinian right to self protection. Survival of the fittest implies that the fittest stand up for themselves. As much as it would be good to see peace break out in Israel, it would be calamitous if Israel enabled peace by allowing Israelis and innocent Gazans to live in constant danger as evil flourishes.
When reading of rockets landing as kids arrive in school, picture the kid down the block ducking under cover as he makes his way to the neighborhood school. Perhaps, there would be less complacency.
