If you have any artistic talent at all, one look at the DVD case for ‘Intermediate Drawing with Barry Stebbing’, will make you want to grab a set of colored pencils and draw something. The white background with an array of brightly colored pencils splashed across the front seems to call to you to draw something colorful. This DVD title is another excellent addition to the drawing tutorials from How Great Thou Art and artist Barry Stebbing. This 3 DVD set is available from How Great Thou Art online and the Christianbook store online.
‘Intermediate Drawing with Barry Stebbing’ picks up where Mr. Stebbing’s previous titles ‘How Great Thou Art: An Inspirational Approach to Drawing’ and ‘The Fundamentals of Beginning Drawing’ left off. Beginning with a lesson to refresh students on the fundamentals learned in the other titles, Mr. Stebbing quickly gets both returning and new students up to speed on the basics.
Lessons are presented in a classroom type setting with the teacher introducing himself as Mr. Stebbing. This format makes it the perfect addition to a home school curriculum or just a fun learning program for your kids over the long Summer months ahead. Longer lessons even include a Recess break.
Each DVD includes two Menu options which make it easy to find and start each lesson:
- Part I: Fundamentals
- Part II: Treasures Around the House
- Part III: Animals
- Part IV: Portraits & Anatomy
- Part V: Perspective & Depth
- Part VI: Nature Studies & Landscape
The lessons are designed to appeal to students age 6 and up and the DVD run time is about 470 minutes. In previous titles, Mr. Stebbing used the characters, Charlie Contrast and Wally the Worm to help illustrate basic drawing techniques. Charlie and Wally return along with Wally’s wife, Wilma, and some new members of the group, Bobby Beet, Millie the Carrot and Cutie Cucumber. These will appeal to the younger students but the presence of these characters is not overdone to the point that it seems too babyish for older students. The lessons are presented in a nice mix of activities that will engage a wide range of age groups.
One gets the sense that Mr. Stebbing has become more comfortable in presenting lessons in this DVD format. His presentation is more polished and he seems more relaxed drawing on a white board instead of a pad on an easel as he did previously.
If you’re dreading the long Summer months ahead and the inevitable lament ‘Mom, we have nothing to do!’, ‘Intermediate Drawing with Barry Stebbing’ might be just the ticket to keep the kids occupied and actually learning something while they’re on vacation. You can find this excellent DVD set at How Great Thou Art online for $29.95. The Christianbook web store also lists the set for $24.99.
