Pet health insurance is becoming increasingly more popular. Where once veterinarians were resistant to the idea of pet insurance, now many embrace the idea, realizing that insurance can help save their patient’s lives. But pet health insurance isn’t right for everybody.
How do I, as a pet owner, know if pet insurance is right for me?
It’s a question you have to answer for yourself. If finances are not a issue for you and you have the ability to cover the cost of care for your pet, including expensive unexpected expenses, then you may not need pet insurance. If you’re the type of person who knows you simply wouldn’t spend large amounts of money on a pet, even if the funds were available, pet insurance is probably not right for you.
However, if you are the type of person who wishes to provide any and all health care necessary for your pet, regardless of the cost involved, then pet care is something you may want to consider.
Pet health insurance can remove the burden of having to worry about the cost of life-saving treatment in the event of an emergency or unexpected illness. In such cases, veterinary bills can sometimes escalate into the thousands, putting treatment out of reach of many pet owners without the benefit of health insurance.
One of the less obvious benefits of pet health insurance is coverage of chronic and/or recurrent illnesses, such as allergic skin disease, ear disease and many others. Though these conditions may not carry huge price tags with each treatment, over time and with many treatments, expenses add up. Pet insurance can help cover the cost of those types of treatments as well as the catastrophic life-saving types of procedures.
What does pet health insurance cover?
The answer to that question depends on the policy that you choose. There are many different options. Some are similar to major medical coverage and others are more limited. Some cover the cost of routine preventive health care procedures and others cover only the cost of sick visits. There is generally a policy that fits the needs of almost any pet owner. You’ll need to become familiar with the terms of the policies you’re considering and decide exactly what your needs entail.
