Part II – Is religion logical
These multi-part series on the logic of religion are hoped to incite in the souls of men and women of any belief system to reconsider what is true, beautiful and good about their religion versus what is simply mystical and exaggerations. These series are largely based on Christianity, but applies generally to all ‘organized religion.’
Where science and religion are miles apart on their “pursuits of truth,” the Urantia Book, for instance, brings science and religion together in near-perfect harmony – God creating through evolution.
Lets examine, for example –The Biblical story of the creation…
It may have been believable in the dark ages, or as a kindergartener, that the “earth was created 6000 years ago.” But still, this same ludicrous teaching still pervades all of Christendom. A recent study shows that, still, in the dawn of the 21st century, approximately 60% of religionists believe the earth’s age to be somewhere between 6000 to 12,000 years.
Are we that gullible or naïve? Perhaps, the 6000-year “creation of heaven and earth” is the most illogical and even ignorant aspect of Christianity. Even science, in the last 2 centuries, has become absolute in the knowledge that Earth is, at least, “millions” of years old. Wow then, what a big difference between “millions” and “6000.”
Yes, while Christianity was busy with its coercive tactics of “hell-fire and damnation,” and the many snake-oil deceptions, science, on the other hand–through the 18th and 19th centuries–was on the march helping mankind to emerge from the clutches of the dark ages’ ignorance.
Still, regarding the age of our Earth it was only two centuries ago when, though the Christian mindset was stuck on a 6000 year-old Earth, among science and cosmic minded, our Earth’s age was growing to a 75,000-ish years figure…
In 1779, the French naturalist, Comte du Buffon, tried to obtain a value for the age of Earth using an experiment: He created a small globe that resembled Earth in composition and then measured its rate of cooling. This led him to estimate that Earth was about 75,000 years old.
In 1862, the physicist William Thomson (who later became Lord Kelvin) of Glasgow published calculations that fixed the age of Earth at between 20 million and 400 million years. He assumed that Earth had formed as a completely molten object, and determined the amount of time it would take for the near-surface to cool to its present temperature. His calculations did not account for heat produced via radioactive decay (a process then unknown to science) or convection inside the Earth, which allows more heat to escape from the interior to warm rocks near the surface.
The last estimate Thomson gave, in 1897, was: “that it was more than 20 and less than 40 million year old, and probably much nearer 20 than 40”. In 1899 and 1900, John Joly of the Trinity College, Dublin calculated the rate at which the oceans should have accumulated salt from erosion processes, and determined that the oceans were about 80 to 100 million years old. The Urantia Book—the link between science and religion
It was in the forefront of the 20th century (1905-1935) that the Urantia Book revelations emerged. Though presenting a greater revelation of Jesus of Nazareth—his life and teachings, the Urantia papers also revealed quite the chronological history of time/space and our universe. And specifically, of our “4.5 billion year-old Earth and solar system.”
These Urantia revelations are entirely consistent with today’s science and geologists. Finally, religion and science can merge … MAYBE! The problem, however, Christianity (so far) has rejected the Urantia Book.
The ministers of Jesus, in the whole 20th century, either ignored the Urantia revelation or asserted clearly that it was “of the devil.” “If it ain’t in the Bible, it ain’t so” they heralded even more loudly.
Why such a rejection of a greater revelation of Jesus?
The Urantia Book contained ‘all’ the missing 30 years of Jesus’ life, and included about 90% more of his teachings than the New Testament had preserved. Why then, pray tell, would the preachers and leaders of Christiandom so unilaterally reject it? Reason, truth and reality were all, finally, meeting in a most logical and religious setting. Why such a rejection!
The simple answer could be—the Urantia revelation would bring to an abrupt halt the supposed power-over-people long usurped by ministers, bishops, popes, pastors, preachers and supposed prophets. Equal to losing power over people was the loss of billions upon billions of dollars extracted from people. No longer could the shephards fleese the flock to bribe the heavens.
If Christianity would embrace the Urantia revelation they would surely lose the grip they have over Christians. The ‘business of religion’ would come to a halt, yes, but the exhillerating ‘freedom in religion,’ the true Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man, as Jesus taught, could finally take root.
Christianity itself, obviously, is the chief culprit of holding Christians in ignorance; especially is this true where roughly 60% of the population still believe in a 6000 year-old Earth. That figure could easily be verified by one polling his own family, friends and neighbors. The results should prove shocking!
It is little wonder, Isaiah wrote this concerning our day …
Isaiah 3: 12
… O my people, they who lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths.
15 The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.
16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed. [King James 2000 Bible (©2003) ]
With the new age of the Internet and the allowing of free access to the Urantia Papers–the bonds that bind us are finally being loosened. The fact that you are reading this very article, is proof.
