Tim Burton’s big screen version of Dark Shadows is set to open tomorrow on Friday, May 11, 2012 in theatres everywhere. Below are five facts that everyone should know about the old television series being adapted for theatres, and that includes star Johnny Depp taking a bit of a subtle shot at the Twilight franchise as well.
Yahoo Movies helped put together five fun facts about Dark Shadows as everyone prepares for the release on Friday.
~ Pale Vs. Sparkly Vampires: When the idea for Dark Shadows came about while filming Sweeney Todd in 2007, Depp stated that vampires just aren’t looking like vampires anymore in movies.
“A vampire should look like a vampire, and it was a kind of rebellion against vampires that look like underwear models,” says Depp. As they were both such fans of the show, the idea of “Dark Shadows” naturally evolved from there. Being part of the development team merited Depp just his third production credit, though he doesn’t sound like he thinks he earned it: “It’s impossible to consider myself a producer. I can barely produce an English muffin in the morning.”
~ Kindred Spirits: Depp was actually obsessed with the Dark Shadows television show as a child. He loved Barnabas Collins and even has pictures of himself as a young boy with posters of the vampire. He said the series moved him to “some other dimension” and even referred to the original Collins (the late Jonathan Frid “as “a true original.”
~ Monster’s Ball: The original TV series was on the air for only six seasons but still produced a huge 1,225 episodes (Available in 131-DVD coffin-shaped box set). While making some changes to the theatrical adaptation, Burton paid a big tribute to the series by including a great number of the original cast members as cameos in the film.
~ It’s Who You Know: Michelle Pfeiffer, playing Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, was also a huge fan of the television show. Once she found out Burton was on as director, she actually reached out to him.
“I was attracted to the project initially, I didn’t even know if there was a role for me. I heard Tim was doing the movie; I called him, which I never do – I hadn’t talked to him in 20 years – and I just said, ‘Look, I just need to go on record as saying I would love to be a part of this. I don’t know if there’s anything for me.’ And a year later, he called. And he had this great part for me,”says Pfeiffer.
~ A Touchy Subject: Burton has a very unique view about the fingers of a vampire and believes they should be very long. Not a problem except for Depp who often needed help going to the bathroom thanks to his fake fingers and nails.
“In every film that I’ve been lucky enough to do with Tim, there’s always some form of torture, and the nails were Tim’s idea. They were the length of the fingers and stuff, but it was okay because I had a troop of people who would help me go to the bathroom. They had to have treatment afterwards but they’re okay now. That is true,”explains Depp.
Dark Shadows is set to open on May 11, 2012 and starsJohnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, Eva Green, Gulliver McGrath, Bella Heathcote, Ray Shirley, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, and Helena-Bonham Carter.
