A barefoot and carefree Kelly Clarkson co-headlined a concert at the Marcus Amphitheater last night during the opening week of Summerfest, the world’s largest music festival. Clarkson displayed an impressive amount of energy during her roughly 70 minute set and ran through a steady list of her greatest hits to date, some newer songs and even a duet. The American Idol gave Milwaukee a glimpse of her ability and power to draw a crowd with the amphitheater around three-quarters full with only the bleachers and lawn not entirely sold out. Train also performed last night.
For photographers, however, trying their best to give Clarkson some quality publicity, the show was a nightmare. Pushed around 70 yards away to the soundboard and given songs two and three to shoot, photographers were left with no option but to use 400-600mm or bigger lenses to try and capture a photo or two when Clarkson didn’t have a hand or arm raised in front of her, a microphone obstructing her face or her back turned to the crowd.
That being said, Kelly sounded great and musically gave her fans the show they were denied earlier in the year when within a span of 2-3 days Clarkson announced and cancelled a Riverside Theater show due to scheduling conflicts. Kelly opened the show with “Dark Side” and ended with “My Life Would Suck Without You,” somewhat what I expected to be completely honest. Between those tunes Clarkson performed stellar versions of “Since U Been Gone,” “I Forgive You,” and “Mr. Know It All,” among other hits.
Before performing the title track “Breakaway,” Clarkson took a moment to thank the crowd for their support and said “It’s been a decade, I appreciate it!” Near the end of the show Clarkson showered the crowd with a bit more praise declaring “I love you, you’re such a fun audience,” and then performed an emotional “Because of You.” Clarkson mentioned taping a duet performance the night before and then brought out on stage Jordan Meredith to help her sing “Stronger.” It seemed there was a fun interaction between the two from what I could see from my lawn seat.
