While speaking in an interview with Empire Magazine, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed some interesting points and directions that the studio was taking with Iron Man 3. A few of the topics that came up touch on whether or not Marvel would be exploring the ‘Demon in a Bottle’ storyline on the big screen. The 9-issue story arc was one of the most profound explorations of Tony Stark, effectively driving home the flawed nature of his character by tackling his issues with alcoholism.
While fans may find this to be an integral part of the character’s story in the comics, Marvel doesn’t feel it needs to be a necessary part of this particular film franchise. Perhaps it comes down to the fact that Disney is overseeing the franchise, but according to Feige, Tony’s alcoholism will not be explored in the films. He suggests that a standalone film devoted to the story arc may do it greater justice (we agree), but for now, the closest alcoholism that we’ll see Tony Stark manage on the big screen will probably be the darker hours we saw him face in Iron Man 2.
“He’s not an alcoholic in the movies. Maybe one day that’s a deeper story, but we’re not going to do it unless we can make it a full-focused plot,” said Feige.
Even still, Feige has promised that the third installment in the Iron Man franchise, directed by Shane Black, has the potential to be the best of the trilogy.
“It’s a fool’s errand to continue to try to top spectacle. We don’t equate bigger with better. It’s Tony’s most personal journey since he was trapped in a cave in the first half of the first movie, but it’ll also have the largest spectacle of any of the Iron Man movies.”
Another burning question is fans minds is if we may get to see Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner make an appearance (even as a cameo) after the well-received chemistry the characters shared on-screen in The Avengers. Kevin denied that Ruffalo would be turning up in Iron Man 3, but went on to say the following.
“We will see the Ruffalo Hulk in future. I don’t know when or how, exactly, but he’s an interesting character, and so many new avenues have opened up. But now in the movies, who’s gonna pop up where? You’re never quite sure.”
And as for the biggest tease revealed in the Empire Magazine interview? Why that would be Kevin Feige’s mention of a 2014 Marvel movie in the works that “will be to introduce a character outside the Avengers’ world.”
Directed by Shane Black, Iron Man 3 will star Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ashley Hamilton and James Badge Dale and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 3rd, 2013.
