ST. CHARLES, MO. — With just days left until the official end of the 2011-2012 college sports season, the Lindenwood University athletics department marked the beginning of the new 2012-2013 athletic year by releasing their men’s hockey schedule to the media Friday morning.
The schedule release, which came a couple days earlier than the usual July 1 unveiling, came with much fanfare, as Lindenwood clearly can’t wait to get started on the new hockey season, after seeing the Lions go 31-5 and advance all the way to the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Frozen Four last year.
This season, which marks the 10th anniversary of the Lions ice hockey program, will see Lindenwood play 28 regular season games, including 16 home contests and 12 road matchups, highlighted by 10 games against teams that finished last year ranked in the top 10 in the final ACHA national poll.
“It’s important for us as a winning program to challenge our players on a weekly basis,” Lindenwood head coach Rick Zombo said in a statement released by the athletics department. “It was true before I arrived five years ago, and I’m proud that we continue to seek out and play the best every season.”
The Lions will begin the new season with a two-game home series against non-conference foe Central Oklahoma at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville on September 28 and 29.
That Friday night opening contest is set for a 7:30 p.m. start, while the second game on Saturday, will begin at 4 p.m.
Lindenwood, which went an undefeated 18-0 in winning the Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL) regular season and postseason conference championships last year, will also play non-conference games against Adrian College, Arizona State, Oklahoma, and Davenport University.
The CSCHL season will begin the weekend of November 9 and 10, when Lindenwood will travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on the University of Illinois in a pair of 7:30 p.m. contest.
The home conference opener will come the following weekend when the Lions host a pair of home games against Iowa State.
Other home matchups this year, include dates with Oklahoma (October 19-20), Davenport (December 7-8), Ohio University (January 5-6), Illinois (January 11-12), and Indiana (January 25-26).
In the previous nine years for Lindenwood ice hockey, the Lions amassed a .806 winning percentage, with a 278-64-3 record, which includes three CSCHL regular season titles, two CSCHL tournament titles and two ACHA national championships.
The Lions have also finished second in the national tournament twice, and has reached the ACHA Frozen Four six times.
Last year, Lindenwood lost in the ACHA tournament semifinals to eventual national champion Delaware.
Robert Morris University will host the 2013 ACHA Division I National Championships, March 1-6, at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Ill.
