It’s been said that nothing is as enduring as a mother’s love, and locally based performer Dee Hilligoss is proof positive of that. However, after a decade-plus of devoting herself to caring full time for her son, she’s back in the saddle and behind the mic to give her country music the spotlight once more.
Based in Franklin, Tenn., Hilligoss has always loved to perform, from singing and acting, to time spent as an NFL cheerleader for the Indianapolis Colts. But when her now 12-year-old son was diagnosed with autism, her performance goals came to a screeching halt so that she could devote herself to his care 24/7.
“When my son was diagnosed it felt like life had ended,” the brunet entertainer has said. “It was a vulnerable, helpless and hopeless time. I had to quickly make the decision to lie down or stand up and fight.”
Her decision was not only to fight, but “to face autism head on.” In turn, she noted, “Every minute of every hour of every day I spent researching about autism and anything I could do to help my son. I knew it wouldn’t be easy but I would never give up. I would do anything for him.”
According to WebMD, autism is a brain disorder that often makes it difficult to communicate with and relate to others because different areas of the brain fail to work together. And for single mom-turned-autism advocate Hilligoss, it’s provided inspiration for her upbeat new single, “Too Soon,” that was released to country radio in April.
Now available on iTunes, “Too Soon” has been described as an energetic anthem for anybody facing difficult times. Hilligoss reportedly will accompany the single release with a nationwide country-radio tour.
“Being able to complete my debut single has been a fabulous opportunity for me,” she said. “I hope it can bring as much hope and inspiration to others as it has brought to me. Everyone goes through tough times, and I hope this song gives my fans the motivation to face their challenges.”
As for the challenges she’s faced since her son’s birth, incuding the demise of her marriage, Hilligoss is a firm believer fate.
“I have always believed that everything happens for a reason,” she observed. “God really does open a window when a door in our lives is closed … (and) for me, I was led back to music.”
