“Mad Men” season 5 finale closes with Don Draper an unhappy man once again, as he finally figures out that Megan is not revolving around his world any longer. This season closes with Peggy at her new firm, Joan prostituting herself for a piece of the agency and Megan embarking on a world where Don is insignificant.
Just when you saw the newly married Don Draper changing his ways, the season closes with him at a bar in the process of getting picked up by a woman. Viewers won’t know if he takes the bait until next season, because he didn’t answer the pick-up line of “Are you alone?” Even USA Today reminds the viewers that as good as Don can appear, he is really not a nice man.
What did Don see in that screen test that Megan took that changed him from smiling like a proud father to a facial feature resembling disgust before it was through? Did he realize that all along he’s just been a stepping-stone for Megan, or is it the fact that the screen test is the beginning of Megan eventually pulling away?
Megan’s screen test was terrible and if Don didn’t win her a spot in the commercial, Megan’s chances were next to nothing when it comes to breaking into acting with paying roles. Maybe Don just realized that he arranged for his marriage’s demise putting Megan behind a camera.
Watching Joan at work, you realize what a viable member of the “Mad Men” ad agency she really is, she’s actually doing Lane’s work. Seeing Joan do this work as a partner is just a reminder how she got there. She slept with a very big client to get him to advertise with the firm in exchange for her partner holdings.
Peggy is with her new firm and just as things start looking up, something else comes along to remind her all is not rosy. She seen in a luxurious hotel room traveling for the new agency. She looks out the hotel window and sees two dogs fornicating. The contrast is enough to make one wonder how long will she last before heading back to Draper’s firm?
Will the “Mad Men” crew get back to their dysfunctional normal selves for next season, or is Roger on a permanent LSD flash-back trip, as he’s seen standing naked in a window overlooking the great city of New York with his arms spread out like Jesus? Will Pete’s be able to live with his new love getting him electro-shocked out of her head as part of her supposed mental illness treatment?
This season brought so much change that there’s really not many remnants left from the beginning of the “Mad Men” show. The strange and bizarre avenues some of the favorite cast members have taken come as just a reminder of how life changes so quickly, especially in the world of the “Mad Men.”
