The Bradenton Marauders (23-28) hung on for a 5-4 victory over the Ft. Myers Miracle (20-31) Tuesday night at McKechnie Field. Gerrit Cole pitched six innings, striking out four to pick up his fourth win of the season against one loss.
The Marauders scored first in the bottom of the third inning on Drew Maggi’s RBI single bringing home Gift Ngoepe who had doubled. The Miracle tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth before Bradenton’s Mel Rojas Jr. hit his league-leading seventh triple to lead off the next half inning and then scored on a Stefan Welch sac fly. Carlos Paulino doubled home a pair of runs to give the M’s a 4-1 lead. Alex Dickerson drove home the eventual game winning run in the fifth.
The Miracle scored one run in the top of the sixth and twice more in the top of the ninth on Levi Michael’s two-run homer off Quinton Miller to pull within 5-4. Miller then retired the next three batters in order to preserve the win for Bradenton and pick up his fifth save of the season. Madison Boers (0-6) took the loss for Ft. Myers.
Gerrit Cole allowed just two runs in his 10th start of the season, one unearned on a passed ball in the fourth and one on Danny Ortiz’ solo home run in the sixth. He has not allowed more than two runs in any of his five starts in May.
The Marauders and Miracle play again tonight (Wednesday) at McKechnie Field in Bradenton beginning at 6:30 p.m.
