Tucked away in a strip mall at Beach Boulevard and Trask in Westminster, CA, between the doughnut shop and Supercuts, the bright red letters announcing, “SUSHI” can not be missed; the smaller sign explaining that there is 30% off for the Grand Opening may not be seen from the street, but as you approach the entrance it stands out and things are looking up already and you have not made it in the door yet.
“Irasshai!” is the greeting each customer hears as they enter the medium size restaurant. Los Angeles Sushi Master Competition finalist and award winner Song Kim will be found smiling and standing behind the sushi bar that seats six. The fish behind the glass is all seasonal and fresh. The restaurant has seating at multiple tables, so it can handle groups with relative ease.
A look at the menu will be impressive and deceiving at the same time. The appetizer menu lists 18 items from Edamame to Oyster in a Half Shell; and that is not including the eight different salads available. As you finish looking at the 10 different sashimi offerings and the 10+ traditional rolls, you realize that you are only half way down the left side of the menu! There must be an additional 25 sushi/sashimi combinations to finish off the side. Impressive indeed, but deceiving? How so?
The right hand side of the menu is designated Special Rolls. There are 57 “special rolls” with rolls you probably never heard of, primarily because they are Song’s own creations. There is the Godzilla made with deep fried shrimp, tuna, unagi, ebi and avocado; or the Laker Roll consisting of tuna, salmon, yellowtail and Song’s own special sauce. The descriptions are quite deceiving, but it would take a page to describe the flavors found in any of these special rolls. The thing is; they are not done yet. On the walls around the restaurant are three whiteboards with even more special rolls, each more grand than the last.
To attempt to describe these rolls with words is like trying to describe the Grand Canyon with crayons. And since one picture is worth 1,000 words, a slideshow has been added for your viewing pleasure.
