Matt Lauer of “Today” might need to develop thicker skin. The show’s host is said by an NBC source to be totally “miserable” after a series of incidents in Manhattan of people yelling rude things at him, TMZ reports Dec. 27. The morning news host makes $25 million a year and an NBC network source told the celebrity gossip site that he feels harassed and that their insulting comments are getting to him.
Crowds are yelling to Lauer, “You’re a bad guy,” and “You got Ann fired. Does that make you happy?”
It’s no secret that Lauer is the one a lot are blaming for the firing of Ann Curry. Reports are published constantly that Lauer is struggling to make NBC satisfied in the ratings department and that the crew hates working with him.
The NBC source said Lauer is growing tired of taking the blame and being harassed.
“It’s driving him crazy,” said the source. “He’s so unhappy.”
Rumor was going around that Willie Geist would take over Lauer’s position if he was to be replaced, but he hosts the 9 a.m. hour and is said to “not be ready for that yet,” by the source. Lauer is bound by a solid contract, so he won’t be fired by the network. Executives supposedly feel “stuck” having Matt Lauer on the show the way things stand right now.
Looks like Matt Lauer may have to develop thicker skin as long as he remains on “Today.”
