Read the review by Richard Cameron of Theatre Chat. Stuff presented at Caldwell Theatre Company in July 2011.
Theatre Chat spoke with our dear friend multi-award winning playwright Michael McKeever “I am thrilled that Stuff is being read by this extraordinary cast under the direction of Ms. Butler.” The Play Reading of Stuff is by invitation only! producers should contact Barbara Hogenson at 212-874-8084 or by email email@example.com.
Michael McKeever, winner of the 2011 Carbonell Award for Best New Work, Stuff reexamines the life of the infamous Collyer Brothers, New York City’s most infamous hoarders. The reading features Sheldon Best (Freed), Penny Fuller (Dividing the Estate), David Greenspan (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Patsy) and Stephen Spinella (An Iliad, As You Like It). Stuff is directed by Shelley Butler.
Stuff: “Born into a gilded world of opulence and breeding, Homer (David Greenspan) and Langley Collyer (Stephen Spinella) have it all: Great wealth, intelligence and a future bright with the golden glow of the American Dream. What they don’t realize is that their coddled world of privilege has left them completely unable to cope with the realities of the Twentieth Century as it evolves around them.
And that their four story Harlem Mansion, stuffed from floor to ceiling with a lifetime of memories and mementos, has become their prison. With great humor, insight and pathos, Stuff charts the fascinatingly twisted decline of two of America’s most notorious hermits, from the loss of their beloved mother (Penny Fuller) in 1929 to their own ironic deaths two decades later. “
Michael McKeever’s plays include 37 Postcards (Hudson Stage Company), The Garden of Hannah List (Hypothetical Theatre Company) and Charlie Cox Runs with Scissors (Marin County Playhouse, Florida Stage).
Shelley Butler recently directed This Is Fiction (Cherry Lane Theatre), The Borrowers (South Coast Rep) and was Associate Director to David Hyde Pierce on It Shoulda Been You (George Street).
The Play Reading of Stuff is by invitation only! producers should contact Barbara Hogenson at 212-874-8084 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org.
