Take a drive around Baltimore and you will notice that there are less and less storefront computer stores, and more big box outlets. Almost every town in the area, at one point, had a computer store. These were places who’s employees were considered local PC experts. Now, people are limited to taking their computer to a huge national chain, or sending it back to the manufacturer.
The big box stores always seem to have someone different working in the store, so the level of expertise varies each time you visit. Sometimes you get someone extremely knowledgeable, other times you get someone new to the field. It’s not uncommon to run into a kid trying to work through college.
As the times change, so does the technology, and how its sold. Gone are the days of having the same person work on your computer. As prices for technology drop, its making it easier for the larger stores to sell new boxes. Chances are, your better of replacing it than trying to fix.
I, for one, will miss walking into a specialty shop and chatting with the owner.
