3.5 out of 4 Movie Beans
Starring: (voices) Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson and Billy Connolly
Merida (Macdonald) is an adventurous Princess coming of age in Scotland in medieval times. She has a free spirit and would much rather be riding through the countryside, exploring and practicing archery over learning to be a proper Princess. When her mother (Thompson) tells her that she must choose one of the neighbouring clan’s sons to be her husband, Merida refuses. Seeking to change her destiny so that she may be free to live the life that she has always wanted, Merida uses the help of a witch’s spell. The spell will not only change her destiny, but will reveal to her the true power of the relationship between mother and daughter.
Has Pixar ever made a bad movie? I mean, apart from “Cars 2”. A heartwarming and original story, “Brave” is a beautiful film capturing the imagination of a young girl who dreams of something more, even though she is a Princess. Funny and lovely to watch, Pixar once again bases its story around the bonds of love and family, just as it did in “The Incredibles” and “Up”. When you do that, you can’t go wrong. It certainly had me tearing up. Though I still rank “Up” as the superior film between the two and is almost completely due to those two heart-wrenching scenes where the old man doesn’t even utter a word. “Brave” is set in the rich landscapes of Scotland and in a time where myth and magic were real, the story sets itself up for numerous possibilities. I think most people will be pleasantly surprised by the direction that it takes. I’d been looking forward to seeing this film since the first trailer was released and I was not disappointed at all. I have heard from multiple people that they will not be going to see “Brave” because it is a ‘cartoon’. I urge you not to miss out on such a great film because of your preconceived notions about cartoons. That reminds me of my Nana saying she didn’t want to see “Titanic” because she’d already seen films about the ship. Pixar is not just making cartoons, they are making beautiful and heartwarming films. Digital animation just happens to be their medium. This is definitely a movie worth seeing in theatres, especially this long weekend with the whole family along!
