Survivor of the Woodsboro massacre and now successful self-help author Sidney Prescott returns to Woodsboro only to be met by a new series of murders. In this fourth installment from director Wes Craven, Sidney must once again find a way to survive as she is the one the masked murderer truly craves.
Neve Campbell (Sidney), David Arquette (Dewey), Courteney Cox (Gale), Lucy Hale (Sherrie), Roger Jackson (The Voice), Shenae Grimes (Trudie), Dane Farwell (Ghostface), Anna Paquin (Rachel), Kristen Bell (Chloe), Aimee Teegarden (Jenny), Hayden Panettiere (Kirby).
Scream 4 begins with some mild background before jumping right back into Ghostface running around killing people and the audience trying to figure out who did it. Was it the weird boyfriend? The movie geeks? A relative? Unfortunately the film doesn’t do a great job of making it hard to guess, though a plot nod to the first couple of films was a bold twist that almost flies.
As with other franchises of late, we have some new faces alongside some foundation actors. Campbell, Arquette, Cox, and the rest of the oldies put forth solid, and predictable, performances grounding the film well. The new faces; Hale, Grimes, Paquin, Bell, and the rest bring some new energy and did pretty well.
Camera work, sets, and background are in keeping with what we have come to expect from the franchise and are fairly well done. Physical effects are well done and add decent quality to the film. Dialogue is okay with the requisite corny lines, while sound and soundtrack are well done.
Overall Scream 4 is more of a yodel than a scream, but still delivers some entertainment. Fans of the franchise will probably enjoy this one, though a few may be bored before the film finishes. Those coming in late may feel a bit lost at references to earlier films.
With plenty of strong blood violence, foul language, and alcohol use, save this for older teens and above.
Scream 4 is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
