In this series prequel we meet Charles, Erik, Mystique, Riptide, Beast and others when they were young and first developing their unique abilities. As the mutants band together they also divide, showing us the beginnings of the two groups that exist through the rest of the series.
James McAvoy (Charles), Laurence Belcher (Young Charles), Michael Fassbender (Erik), Bill Milner (Young Erik), Kevin Bacon (Sebastian), Rose Byrne (Moira), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Morgan Lily (Young Mystique), Oliver Platt (Scientist), Alex Gonzalez (Riptide), Nicholas Hoult (Hank).
X-Men: First Class starts off pretty well, introducing us to most of the X-Men as normal, then presenting their mutations. From there the film develops a good vs. evil theme that is prevalent throughout the rest of the film. Along the way we see the social interactions and attractions that explain the later episodes, along with the battles, scars, and choices made. The film wraps up nicely with a solid ending that prepares us for more to come.
Acting was decent for the most part, and actor selection was quite good. McAvoy and Fassbender play well against each other and feel consistent with the series. Lawrence and Hoult were other good choices that fit their roles well. Bacon was an excellent choice as antagonist and did very nicely.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good and heavily mixed with CGI. The CGI work was well done without appearing cartoonish. Action scenes were solid with good depth. Dialogue was good but a bit dry, while sound and soundtrack were nicely done.
Overall X-Men: First Class is fairly well done for a post-series released prequel. Plot consistency feels good and technical details, action, and emotion seem to be fairly consistent with the existing films. Fans will probably enjoy this one.
With action, violence, mild sexual content, and some foul language this should actually be fine for preens and above.
X-Men: First Class is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
