This morning, MSC OPAS Executive Director Anne Black noted that their Season 40 programming for younger audiences would include one schedule change, with the replacement of “Strawberry Freckleface – the Musical” with “Not Afraid of the Dark – The Show That Glows!” The Ballet Austin production will be one evening only, Saturday, October 13, at 7 pm in Rudder Auditorium.
Organizers note that “using an array of special lighting effects and dancing stickmen, ‘Not Afraid of the Dark – The Show That Glows’ seeks to dispel that fear and leave children with a lasting impression of the beauty and the magic that can only happen when you turn out the lights.”
Black explained of the programming change, “The representative of Freckleface informed us that the producers decided to cancel the tour because they did not want to sacrifice the artistic integrity of the show.” Black assures, “we are hopeful that the wonderful production will be ready for touring sometime down the road.” Julianne Moore’s musical creation (based on her childhood nickname) has been a great success in New York City, and can still be seen at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center weekends now until July 1st.
Just 10 years ago, for the 30th anniversary OPAS season, the “Not Afraid of the Dark” program was included in the OPAS JR series with great acclaim, to a near capacity crowd. Black notes, “We are very excited to welcome one of the most popular OPAS JR titles in our history back to Rudder Auditorium in October.”
Original music for the show is composed by Joe Scruggs, noted in the Austin music scene for his children’s music. In a 2011 interview, Scruggs noted that the character in “Not Afraid of the Dark” was modeled on his son Patrick’s childhood,. Today, Patrick is a senior at Texas State University. Thus, this new OPAS JR show has both longevity and great history in the production. And, it will likely help many children not be afraid of the dark any longer, once they see the show.
The show features “vibrantly colored costumes, dancing bubbles, exciting special effects, and mesmerizing choreography by Stephen Mills to dispel children’s fear of the dark.” Other OPAS JR programming includes the Popovich Comedy Pet Theatre on Feb. 2, 2013, and Ramona Quimby on February 23, at 2 pm and 4 pm.
