The unofficial start of summer begins in Baltimore every Memorial Day Weekend. As temperatures climb, kids are spending time indoors to keep cool. This summer children can join the Fire Museum of Maryland for some cool, but hot activities.
Summer Activities for Kids
Every weekday from Wednesday through Friday at 11 a.m., kids can join a different play activity related to fire rescue. Running through August, Wednesday is Craft Time, Thursday is Storytime, and Fridays feature the new fire-fighting game Rescue Me.
The new game, Rescue Me allows children to dress up in fire-fighting gear, including play breathing apparatus. As children practice rescuing each other from a “burning building, they will learn how firefighters rescue people during emergencies.
After each day’s activity, there will be a guided Museum Tour led by Firefighter Tom at 12 p.m. (a Museum Tour is also available on Saturdays to visitors of all ages). During regular museum hours, children can visit the Discovery Room to dress up as firefighters and play on a 1938 Mack Engine.
Fire Museum of Maryland
The Fire Museum of Maryland is the third largest of its kind. On exhibit are over 40 antique fire apparatus, and a collection of firefighting equipment and memorabilia. The main floor also features a reconstructed 1870s Fire House. Other exhibits include a history and video of the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904.
