The Obama administration is going to be coaching African-American pastors on just what they can say on the pulpit in support of President Obama’s reelection aspirations, without jeopardizing their churches’ tax-free status. From the Washington Examiner:
Attorney General Eric Holder, the IRS, and the liberal lawyers at the ACLU will brief several hundred pastors in the African American community on how to participate in the presidential election — which the Congressional Black Caucus chair expects will help President Obama’s campaign.
“We will have representatives from nine denominations who actually pastor somewhere in the neighborhood of about 10 million people, and we’re going to first of all equip them with the information they need to know about what they can say and what they cannot say in the church that would violate their 501c3 status with the IRS,” Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., told MSNBC today.
As National Gun rights Examiner Dan and Sipsey Street Irregular Mike Vanderboegh observe, this appears to be half of a two-pronged effort involving black clergy, with the other half geared toward discouraging “Project Gunwalker” investigators in Congress from pursuing the investigation, lest they be labeled “racist” (a powerfully effective threat, by all indications).
It is perhaps unfortunate that apparently only African-American pastors are to be included in this coaching, because one white Catholic priest, who nonetheless ministers to a predominately black congregation, could certainly use some instruction in this subject. Chicago’s Father Michael “Snuffy” Pfleger–so named for his threat to “snuff out” gun dealers and legislators opposed to making Illinois gun laws even more draconian than they already are–has a long history of preaching very specific, partisan political advocacy (a history that repeats itelf), and has so far seemed immune to the tax consequences one might expect.
Come to think of it, apparently “Snuffy” doesn’t need that coaching after all, since he can simply count on the administration letting him get away with flouting tax law. “Separation of church and state” is evidently to be treated rather . . . flexibly.
